Introduction: COLLAPSIBLE HIKING/ FISHING/ SURVIVAL STICK

About: Retired Shop Teacher, Tool Collector, I like Cars, Guitars, Bikes and Electronics. I'd rather Recycle than buy Materials. Definitely Old-School Methods.

This stows easily in your trunk, ATV, backpack or bike. It doubles as a walking/ hiking stick, fishing rod, or in the event you get lost, has all the gear you need to start a fire, build a shelter, signal for help, secure something with paracord, light your way, or navigate yourself out of the woods.

Supplies

Materials:

An adjustable walking stick. These come in pairs. You only need one.

Double sided mounting tape

Epoxy glue

Bicycle strobe light

Paracord (about 30 feet)

Watertight survival capsule containing compass, flint, whistle, reflector.

Strike anywhere matches, sinkers, leaders, hooks, aluminum foil, band aids, sterile wipes etc.

Heavy duty fishing line guide

Fishing line

Quick release zip tie(s)

Two mirror clips

Elastics

Aluminum foil

Pocket “Swiss Army” style knife

Step 1: GLUE LINE GUIDE AND CLIPS TO UPPER SHAFT

Mix the epoxy, and glue the line guide to the end of the non- moving part of the shaft. Glue the mirror clips about 6” apart close to the handle. Make certain they are the reverse of each other so fishing line can be wound around them. (Alternatively, you could attach a small fishing reel but I felt it would make the device too bulky.)

Step 2: INSTALL PARACORD

Stick a line of double sided tape to the top of the non- moving part of the shaft, from the handle to the end. Tie off the paracord near the handle and wind it very tightly around the shaft, covering the mountings for the clips and the line guide. The tape will hold it in place. When you come to the end, tie it off. Cut the loose ends short with the pocket knife and seal the ends with a match. It will be easily removable when needed.

Step 3: WIND THE FISHING LINE

Tie off the fishing line to the hanger closest to the handle. Wind a generous amount between the two hangers. Tie a leader to the end. Pass it through the line guide and secure it to the clip closest to the handle with an elastic to keep tension and hold it in place till needed.

Step 4: ATTACH THE STROBE LIGHT AND SURVIVAL CAPSULE

Attach the strobe light with its strap. Fill the survival capsule with matches, hooks, sinkers, etc.(wrap them in foil) and attach it to the shaft with a zip tie. You can do the same with the pocket knife if desired.

I keep my stick in the trunk of my car in case I get the urge to hike or fish.
