Introduction: Candle Making for Kids & Parents

About: Tech loving Dad to a Maker Son (Abzy) and a Baker Daughter (Yati). I share instructables of what my children make.

This time we have a fun do-it-yourself (DIY) Candle Making Activity for parents and kids. Our kids went a step ahead and made custom made kits for you so that you get all the required ingredients at your doorstep. This activity would help kids to:

  • Bond with parents
  • Express their creativity
  • Work hands on

Estimated Time:

40 – 60 mins

Supplies

To get started you need to buy the following from the market.

  • Candle Wax
  • Clay Pots
  • Glitter Paint
  • Candle Wick
  • PaintBrush

Step 1: Boiling the Water

Let us get our ingredients out.

Pour water in any small cooking pot and fill it to half its capacity. We used a handi (a deep, wide-mouthed cooking vessel used in Pakistani cooking) which was perfect for this.

Step 2: Preparing the Pots

Carefully place another pan on top of the handi and we will use this to melt our wax.

Step 3: Melting the Wax

Time to put the wax inside the pan, fire up the stove and let the water boil. In about 2-5 minutes, depending on the heat you will see the wax will start to melt. It is pretty mesmerizing to look at. You must wait till it completely liquifies.

Step 4: Pouring the Molten Wax

Get your clay pots ready and pour molten wax in them. Molten wax is very hot so caution is advised. Put the candle wick inside and be sure not to take too much time as wax solidifies quickly.

Step 5: Fixing the Candle Wick

Hold the candle wick in place till the wax solidifies slightly. It won’t take too long but you will feel this as you hold the wick.

We used a paintbrush to help us hold the wick in place.

Step 6: Get Ready to Paint

Now that your candle is ready you can get on with the painting part

Kids just enjoy painting pots so let them get creative.

Step 7: And Our Candle Set Is Ready

And finally our candle set is ready.

If you couple this with a lovely card (let your kids make one) and surprise your Grandparents with this lovely gift. We are pretty sure they will love it. Do share what you made with us on our unschoolstory facebook / instagram page.

Cheers and Have Fun :)
