Canoe or Kayak Hood Hook

Intro: Canoe or Kayak Hood Hook

Sometime you don't have a place to hook your canoe on your front bumper. I'm going to show you my solution for this problem.

STEP 1: Cut the Strap

First you will need a grommet kit available at wall-mart or other stores in the camping department. You need to begin to cut 2 pieces of an old strap, 2 foots each.

STEP 2: Punch Holes

Punch 2 holes in the strap, one each end. Take the lighter to burn the edge of the strap and the hole you just created in the strap.

STEP 3: Fix the Grommet

Install the grommet in the hole like in the picture and place it in the die. Bump it hard with a hammer.

STEP 4: Your Done With the Strap.

This is the final product...

STEP 5: Fix It Under the Hood

You need to find a bolt to fix it under the hood. I took the hood latch bolt and it works great. When you don't need it, just put it under the hood and you don't see it.

I don't get why you put two straps under the bonnet and when it's closed I only see one strap poking out witht the kayak strap attached to it.

This is an awesome idea, I don't have the use for it myself but if I ever do I'm so going to try this it's prefect!
Yes! This is a great idea!
Very nice. I just have a short loop of perlon wrapped around a frame member near my radiator. And thanks for tying your canoe down front and rear - idiots flying down the highway with "unsecured" loads scare the crap out of me.
This is a great idea. I have a Saturn S-series, too, and it is so not designed to carry stuff on the roof! I usually use a Y-shaped strap and hooks through those square holes above and to either side of the bolt you used. This looks like a much better idea. But, does the strap get in the way of the hood latch?
You've done everything except show how to connect the two straps. I see two straps and then there is one. What happened to the other one? I used to be in the technical writing biz and one thing I learned early was that what seems obvious to the writer is not always obvious to the reader. What am I missing?
Look at step 5, there is now a second picture (close up) and you gonna understand.
Perfect. Thanks.
It looks like he ran a third strap (or the rest of the long one he started with) through the loops and back to the canoe. That's a great idea -- the nice short straps tuck under the hood & don't get tangled up with anything. There's absolutely nothing solid to attach to under the front of a Saturn S-series except the torsion bar. (Yay Saturn S-series!)
