Introduction: Cardboard Rhino Head

I will be using a laser to cut out a detailed 3D model of a Rhino's head.

Step 1: Materials

  1. Cardboard
  2. Square dowels, 1/4 inch thick
  3. Laser Cutter
  4. Cut out template
  5. Glue, tape, hot glue, etc...

Step 2: Cutting

Sorry in advance, I should have re-arranged the pieces so they will be in order.

The file provided contains all the parts that you will need. The Cyan rectangles are 32 x 18 inches, so you may need to adjust the size depending on your work area. The blue are supposed to be cut out, while the red are just enough to see so you know the order of each piece.

Step 3: Putting Together

Here is where the sorry from earlier comes in, the pieces are not in order so you will have something similar to the picture. If you are willing to take the time to put them in order then it will be easier for multiple reasons

  1. Less clutter
  2. Less chances of loosing pieces
  3. If they are in order you can build as they come so it will be a bit faster

Anyway, you hold them together you can use any adhesive. I use three different things, double stick tape, wood glue, and hot glue. All of them work fine so really it is up to you on what you use. Hot glue works but you need to be quick, I found out that the 30 seconds it took to slide the piece down a dowel the glue already hardened.

Start at the base ( which are pieces 1, 2, 3, etc...), that way it is easier than having to balance everything on the horn. Take your time especially near the ears since the pieces get really thin there, I actually left out the last two layers on the tip of the ears because they were too small, either way it still looks good.

I don't have the actual measurements of the finished model but I will put them up and soon as I can but I do know that from the base to the tip of the horn is around 18 inches so it is pretty big.
