Introduction: Cardboard Tank With a Rotating Turret (for TONKS)

This tank, or, CARTONK, is designed for use with the game TONKS, where players fight each other with miniature tanks. It has a rotating turret with space for a blast marker and an indent for your hull point die. If the last sentence didn't make sense, check out the game here: https://28-mag.com/games/

Supplies

  • 14 x 9 cm (~5.5 x 3.5 in) cardboard, cereal box thickness is ideal
  • half of a toilet paper tube
  • 6-sided die
  • scissors
  • hobby knife (optional, makes some steps easier)
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • stapler with a narrow jaw (optionally glue)

Step 1: Turret Marking

Draw a line around the side of the toilet paper tube, approximately in the center.

Step 2: Turret Cutting

Make six cuts with even gaps between them from one end of the tube up to the line.

Step 3: Turret Assembly

  1. Fold five of the flaps inward and one out.
  2. Staple (or glue) the five flaps together.

Step 4: Hull Measuring

Make markings 2cm (or your hull's height) from the corners on all sides of the cardboard.

The example measures are for a 5x10x2 cm (~2x4x0.8 in) hull. To find out how much cardboard you need add twice the hull's height to both the width and the length. I.e., if height is 2 cm, length 10 and width 5, your cardboard should be 10+2x2 long and 5+2x2 wide, that is, 14x9 cm. Remember that the turret has to fit, so don't make your hull narrower than the toilet paper tube.

Step 5: Hull Cutting

  1. Cut lightly according to your markings, but make sure not to apply too much pressure: these cuts are for making folding easier and should not go through the cardboard.
  2. Make cuts through the cardboard to create four flaps.
  3. Fold along all lines.

Step 6: Hull Assembly

Staple (or glue) all flaps to create a box.

Step 7: Final Marking

Mark places for the turret and the hull point die.

Step 8: Final Cutting

  1. Make cuts as seen in the pictures and shorten the flaps for the turret.
  2. Fold the flaps inward.

Step 9: Final Assembly

Push the turret and die through their holes and adjust the flaps if needed.
