Cardholder With Notepad

I am an Industrial Design student and have been taking a couple book making classes in past semesters. This cardholder with notepad is something that I have come up with through said classes. These are fairly quick to create and are very usable. I have one with me almost everywhere I go. The pencil holder keeps it closed and is an easy way to remember a writing device.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Tools needed:

Steel ruler or T-square
Mat Knife
Glue Stick
Needle and Thread
Bone Folder ( Used for folding paper, thumbnail will work as well )

Materials:

8.5 x 11" craft or butcher paper, or cut out from paper shopping bag (1)
8.5" x 11" text weight paper or printer paper (10)
some scrap craft paper for pencil holder

Step 2: First and Second Fold

Start by folding your 8.5" x 11" craft paper in half.

Then measure down 3/4 from both end and fold there on both sides.

Step 3: Folding Corners Down

Measure down 1.5" from all corners and fold into right triangle.

Step 4: Next Fold

From the same place where the right tringles were folded to, fold down both sides.

Step 5: Fold to Wallet Size

Flip paper over and work from this side.

Make two folds that will nest into one another to hold the cardholder structure together.
Use a credit card to determine where these need to be.
Make sure to leave about 1/8" on either side of card from fold.

Step 6: Cutting Paper for Notepad

First measure the length and width of your cardholder.

You are going to want to cut the paper for your notepad about 1/4" smaller then the cardholder to set it in from the edge.

Mine came out to be about 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" so I cut my notepad paper to 6 1/4" x 3 1/4".

Step 7: Fold Notepad

Fold all paper cut for notepad in half.

Step 8: Holes for Sewing

The notepad is going to be sewn together using a three hold stitch.

Using your needle poke a hole in center of all papers.
The poke a hole 3/4" from top and bottom.

Tip for making holes: Get it started on first page then hold the stack of paper and push down with needle vertically placed in desired location.

Step 9: Securing Thread to Needle

An easy way to secure the thread to the need to sewing books is by threading it through the eye hole and then poking through said thread on same side.

Then slowly pull thread down to snug it to the needle.

Step 10: Sewing Notepad to Cardholder

To begin sewing the notepad to cardholder use the holes you punched in the notepad as a template to make hold in cardholder.

Then begin sewing starting from the inside. ( which ever side you start on is going to be where the knot is )
Next choose either the top or bottom hole, the go past middle hole and into the hole that hasn't been threaded yet.
Next go back through center hole to end up where you began.
Finally tie a square knot twice in the thread and trim excess off to finnish the sew.

Step 11: Pencil Holder

The pencil holder can be made from scrap craft paper.
You need two pieces that are about 1 3/4" x 2"
Use your pencil to find size of loop.
Then use a glue stick to secure loop together.
The loops are then glued into the folds of the cardholder.
