Intro: Carve Wooden Toys!!

I like to whittle with a pocket knife from time to time, and got a wild idea to carve a few trains for Christmas present charity donations last year. These are each free carved from 2x4 size alder wood. Toys are beloved regardless of exact reproduction scale so give it a try and be guaranteed an appreciative response for your effort!!

STEP 1: Carve the Train Shape

Start by drawing the basic desired shape on the solid wood block. Use a hand saw to remove large areas of undesired material. Next whittle away!! Just go for it until it looks right!! The train may get smaller as mistakes are made and carved away, but you will prevail in the end!! As you can see, each train I made is different, that is not by design, I had no choice because I couldn't do it twice the same way!!

STEP 2: Add a Chimney and Light

I carved the bell shape of the light and stack on the end of an old broom handle. Once it looked right, I simply cut it loose. Once the parts are made, simply drill a hole to glue them into. I also added store bought wooden wheels because wheels are tricky to make by hand.... I finished with a good sanding and paint overcoat. The project was great fun and went to a great cause!!! Wheels are tricky to make by hand? Now there's an understatement! They do make a special bit you can use on a drill press in order to make them though. But you are better off buying a bag at a craft store.

Your cars remind me of a wooden train I made once, but I made mine using power machinery. Here is a picture of it:
