In this instructable i will show you how to use your pc idle time to help change the world.
You know that you could help treat childhood cancer while watching a video on youtube?

What if i told you that you can also cure Zika while listening to music? or treat HIV/AIDS while reading the news?

Yes all that and more are possible by donating our pc/android spare computing power to help scientists solve the world’s biggest problems in health and sustainability. So let's do this.

Step 1:

First we need to download a program called "Boinc" so our device can receive work, compute and send back the results.
Head to https://boinc.berkeley.edu/ and download boinc. For Linux users with debian based distros a

sudo apt-get install boinc boinc-manager

on the terminal will do the trick. Also is available from official repositories.

For windows users it's pretty much straight forward. After you download boinc, you need to go to World community grid and register for an account https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/discover.action#introduction

When you are done, run boinc. A window will pop up to choose project. Scroll down to World community Grid

and log in with your username and password ( previous register there).

That's it, your device will start download projects and start computing them. When project is done, it will be send back to their server and you will receive another one.

Step 2:

Remember that boinc will start when your device starts. You can disable this by going to Options > other options > and uncheck "Run Manager at login".

For linux users you can start/stop/restart or check status at boot with those commands:

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client start

- starts BOINC client, running as a system daemon.

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client stop

- stops the BOINC daemon

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart

- stop and start the BOINC daemon.

sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client status

- report on status of the daemon (is it running or not?)

You can check World Community Grid for more information. You can join a team and "grid" together with your friends, you can check your results, and you can earn badges for your contribution.

I will be happy to hear from you, if you have any questions or you need help to set boinc please let me know.

Check our team there "Hellas United".

Happy crunching and good day to all.
