Introduction: Cheese, Potato and Onion Jaffel

What's a Jaffel? It's a toasted sandwich which has the edges sealed in.

Apparently, the Jaffle Iron was designed, named and patented in Australia in June 1949 by Dr Ernest E. Smithers, : Its a bit like a 'Pressure Toaster'. You can also get jaffel irons to use on camp fires. These made of cast iron can provide a tasty snack while camping.

Talking of tasty snacks, this jaffel filling is one of the best (IMHO) and makes a change from bake beans and cheese.

Step 1: Potato Preparation

  • Cut up some potatoes and cook by boiling. The ones I had were prewashed, so I didn't peel them.
  • Once cooked, mash them up. I used a fork but you could also use a potato masher.

Step 2: How to Cut an Onion

Here' a easy way to cut an onion:

  • Cut the onion in half
  • Cut of one end off while leaving the other end on
  • Peel the half
  • Make cuts vertically, away from the end still attached
  • Slice horizontial, I do this slighly downwards
  • Slice crossways, this completes the dicing of the onion half

Step 3: Mix and Season

  • Mix the onion in with the mash potato
  • Mix in the cheese
  • Use your own judgement for the quanties of each ingredient
  • Add in some seasoning

Step 4: Cook

  • Spay a bit of cooking oil on to the jaffel iron, or what you can do is butter one side on the bread and place this side against the iron's surface.
  • Spoon in the Cheese, Potato and Onion mixture. I normally put in a little too much filling, just the way it goes.
  • Place on top another slice of bread
  • Close the jaffle iron together and cook to perfection.

Step 5: Eat

  • Remove the jaffle from the iron and serve.
  • Can also be enjoyed with a refreshing beverage.
