Introduction: Cigar Box Speaker With False Bottom
I was bored one day and went down to my basement to the room where my family keeps all of the craft stuff. I noticed this cigar box in the corner and decided to make a speaker.
Step 1: Requirements
For this project you will need:
Copper wire (any lengths)
Speakers
3.5 Jack (I used the circuit I took the speakers from, but as long as the speakers have power, you can just use a jack)
Cigar box
Paracord (optional for wire management)
Wire strippers
Razor
Scissors
Hot glue
Soldering iron
Drill
Sander head for drill

Step 2: Prepare the Box
Mark the box where you would like to place the speakers.
Step 3: Drill the Holes
Drill out the holes where marked. It may work better to use a drill a little smaller than the actual hole size. Sand the edges of the holes until the speakers fit snugly. Do not glue into place
Step 4: Wire the Speaker
Pull the speakers out of the holes in the box and connect the copper wire to the speaker. You may wish to solder them, but I found the hole in the cigar box was tight enough to keep them connected. Thread the wire through the paracord (optional) and then through the hole in the box, pushing the speaker in as tightly as possible.
Step 5: Wire the Jack
Connect the copper wire from the speaker to the jack. Make sure they are making full contact for the fullest effect. Soldering these parts will make them less likely to short.
Step 6: Making Secret Compartment
Now that the speaker is finished, you can move on to the secret compartment. Materials:
rectangles of wood the height of the compartment you want to build
magnetic cabinet closure with plate
magnet much stronger than closure
metal strip with a place you can hold
extra wood close in color to box
hacksaw
jigsaw
screwdriver
electric screwdriver
drill
pliers
clamp

Step 7: Measure and Cut the Wood
When you have gathered all of the materials, you need to measure the extra wood to fit into the bottom of the box. Once the wood is measured, cut it. You may need a sander to sand the wood so that it will fit just well enough to fall to the bottom.
Step 8: Assemble the Closure
Take one of the rectangles and screw the magnet part of the metal closure to the piece. Be sure that your strong magnet has enough pull to pull the plate away from the closure even through the false bottom.
Step 9: Screw the Rectangles Down
Screw the rectangles to the bottom of the box through the bottom. You may want to drill a shallow depression for the head to fit into from the bottom. Be sure that the rectangles are screwed down tightly.
Step 10: Glue the Plate to the Bottom
Glue the plate of the magnetic closure to the bottom of the false bottom, making sure that it fits over the magnet well enough that the false bottom rests on the rectangles
Step 11: Build the Key
Take the magnet and strip of metal and center the magnet over the part of the metal that you can grip. Cut most of the extra metal from the strip and fold the rest up to the sides of the magnet (will likely need pliers and vice) This will be the key to opening your secret compartment.
Step 12: Plug and Enjoy!
Check all of the wire connections and make sure they are firm. Plug the jack into your mp3 player, ipod, or phone and enjoy! Use the key to pull out the false bottom and store things in it and drop the bottom back into place.
Step 13: Conclusion
I have little experience in wiring or even woodworking. This is a very easy project to do, and it looks nice and sounds good. I will likely be doing another Instructable adding bluetooth capabilities.
