Introduction: Clip on 3D Glasses, Green Solution for Nearsighted 3D Movie Enthuseists

If you wear perscription glasses and enjoy 3D film, you've been there. The choice: just wear the 3D glasses and give up details in the movie, or wear both and suffer through the awkward look and feel of stacked glasses.
No more! Here is the fifteen minute and virtually (pun unfortunetly intended) free solution. Low skill level required.
Enjoy, and thanks for reading!

Step 1: Remove Ear Rests

The ear rests on your standard 3D glasses pop off pretty easily. Flex slowly away from the glasses, once you get past about 160 degrees they should come off. If this prosess separates part of the front housing from the 3D glasses, gentle pressure will click it back in.
Save the ear rests! They will become the rest of the parts you need for this project.

Step 2: Remove Ear Rests

The ear rests on your standard 3D glasses pop off pretty easily. Flex slowly away from the glasses, once you get past about 160 degrees they should come off. If this prosess separates part of the front housing from the 3D glasses, gentle pressure will click it back in.
Save the ear rests! They will become the rest of the parts you need for this project.

Step 3: Break First Two Pieces

Your first two pieces will be above and below the nose portion of the perscription glasses. You will need one lenght slightly shorter than wire/plastic between the lenses, and a second piece that is slightly narrower than the space between the two lenses, bellow the nose portion of your perscription glasses.

To break your pieces, score the desired length all the way around of the ear rests of the 3D glasses with a box knife. bend gently until plastic snaps at score line. If plastic does not break, score again along the same line more deeply and re-attempt. Repeat for second piece.
I recommend trimming any sharp edges with the box knife, but since most raw ends will be covered this is optional.

Step 4: Attach Nose Pieces

Placement for the nose rest pieces is important, first carefully align perscription glasses with 3D glasses. I held the 3D glasses a bit higher as a personal preference because I like to sit up close in the theater, hence looking up. Once you've setteled on a height, set up the hot glue gun. Using a moderate amount of hot glue, fix the longer upper piece to the inside of the 3D glasses just above where you want the nose piece of the perscription glasses to sit.
Let cool.
Hold perscription glasses up under newly attached piece and mark with a pencile or just a finger where the nose rest portion of the perscrition glasses ends.
Being careful to center the second, shorter piece, apply moderate amount of hot glue and attach.
let cool
Do one more check to make sure that the perscription glasses fit easily but snuggly between the new pieces. Idealy the 3D glasses should stay on if your head is tipped back slightly.
If pieces are missaligned, it should be relatively easy to pop the piece back off and refit after trimming off hot glue.

Step 5: Break and Attach Side Braces

For the next step you will need four more pieces from the removed ear rests from the 3D glasses. For your lengths, place the perscription glasses on, and place the 3D glasses on over, resting them on the newly attached over-the-nose pieces. These new pieces will form side supports and light tension to hold the 3D glasses on. You will need two pieces the length from the inside of the 3D glasses, to the inside of the perscription glasses frame immediatly to the outside of the lenses. In the picture shown, this turned out to be approximatly 3/4 of an inch. Break these pieces using the same method described for getting the nose rest pieces.
Next, you will need two more pieces, to form the "down arms" , one longer than the other. I used the lenghts 1/2 and 3/4 inch for my set to fit a pair of wire frame glasses.
Using the perscription glasses as a size guage, fix the first two pieces to the 3D glasses where they can sit just over the top of the perscriptiong glasses, between the lens and ear rests.
let cool.
Next, fix the "down arm" pieces at a right angle to the recently attached pieces. Which side to attach the longer piece is entirely up to preference, shown here the longer arm is on the Left of the 3D glasses.
let cool
To "clip on" first slid the perscription glasses under longer arm, then slide up into nose rest and under shorter arm. If this action isn't easy, fine tune placement untill 3D glasses are easy to attach, but hold steady once on.

Step 6: Enjoy!

Now your ready to go. Of course a proper feild test is always in order!
Now your ready to enjoy a 3D film, glasses related distraction free, and since your reusing the same pair of glasses rather than having them reprocessed and repackaged each time (those little plastic bags add up!), making 3D greener.
