Introduction: Cold Weather Home Made Suet

About: Retired teacher. Gardener, woodworker, bird enthusiast, and maker of things.
There are lots of recipes for homemade suet out there. I used the one from The Audubon Society. (mostly, I didn’t follow it exactly!)

This recipe for homemade suet is great for winter. In temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit is could spoil before the birds finish it.

Supplies

Sauce pan
A bowl
Mixing spoon
Used suet molds or something like that, ice cube trays
1 1/2 cups lard
3/4 cups nut butter (any kind)
3 1/2 cups wild bird seed
1 cup oats
1/2 cup corn meal
1/2 cup of dried meal worms, optional

Step 1: Getting Started

Start by melting the lard and the peanut butter on medium low heat. Do not boil.

Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients

While the lard and peanut butter are melting, mix together the dry ingredients in a separate bowl.

I just used my hands to mix everything together.

To crush the mealworms, I put them in a sandwich bag and crushed them with my hands.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

You’re almost finished.

Pour the melted mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until everything is well mixed.

Step 4: Fill Your Molds

I used suet pans I saved from store bought suet. I added plastic wrap before filling so it was easy to remove. Any type container like this will work including ice cube trays.
