In this Instructables, you will learn to make a colorful wall decoration out of wooden cubes!

This is a cheap, easy, flexible wall decoration that everyone in the family can help work on! The color scheme will look great on your wall as well!

Supplies

  • 48 pieces of Solid Wood Craft Blocks, 2-inch
  • 20-40 pieces of Solid Wood Craft Blocks, 1-inch
  • Wood pieces blank wood squares, 1-inch
  • 1x1x0.5 Acrylic blocks (optional)
  • Double-sided Mounting Squares 1x1
  • Paint (Sample paints bought from Sherwin Williams) of various colors (see Step 1 design).

Step 1: Color Design

We want to have a beach themed color palette, with yellow sand and blue water.

There are many color choices available, but we decided to go with yellow/gold, shades of blue, and grey. For a wall decoration (or any piece of art), a mixture of individually beautiful colors do not necessarily look well together – they need to complement or coordinate nicely. Fortunately, there are many well designed color-palette available, such as the one below:

Feel free to find your own color palette!

Step 2: Masking Off the Blocks

Masked off a roughly 10 mm border on the 2-inch block, and 5mm on the 1-inch block. The reason we do not color the whole block is that when coloring all the sides, some paint might stain the wall.

Step 3: Color the Blocks

Adjust the following steps as necessary for your color palette.

Color the 12 2-inch blocks grey, 12 yellow, 12 light blue, and 12 dark blue.

For 1-inch blocks, color in similar proportions of each color.

For 1-inch wood squares, use metallic silver paint.

For the optional 1-inch acrylic blocks, color some metallic silver or gold.

Step 4: Decorate Your Wall!

This part is the most fun! Use the double-sided mounting tape to glue the blocks onto the wall.

This wall is easy to adjust: you can easily just take off a block or two and stick them onto another spot!
