Introduction: Colorful Windspinner

Hello!

If you want a mesmerizing, colorful addition to your backyard, this project is for you. It is simple, easy, and fun to make!

We made this project in 5 hours over the course of a week.

Supplies

Materials:

-wood (amount depends on how big you want it to be)

-threaded rod

-2 washers

-2 nuts

-spray paint (or any paint of your choice)

Tools:

-table saw

-band saw

-drill press

-sander

Step 1: 1. Cut Your Wood

Cut your wood into 50 1/2"x 1/2"x 10" pieces or just enough pieces to fill your rod leaving 2 inches at each end.

We recommend using a table saw for this step.

You could alter the measurements depending on what you want the final product to look like.

Tip: if you have any extra pieces that are less than 10" (or your average piece size) add them to the ends

Step 2: 2. Drill Holes in the Pieces

Using a ruler, find the center of each piece. It is crucial that these measurements are exact so that the pieces lay evenly on the rod.

We used a drill press for this. Test on a scrap piece of wood to make sure you are cutting the right size holes.

Step 3: 3. Assemble the Pieces on the Rod

Once you have drilled holes in all of the pieces, assemble them on the rod. Put a washer and a nut on each end and make sure it is tight.

Step 4: 4. Create Edge Design

Take a piece of paper and measure it to the size of the wood. Fold it in half and draw and cut out your design on the paper. Unfold it and trace the design onto the wood pieces.

Step 5: 5. Cut the Edge Design

Use a bandsaw to follow and cut out the tracing you made.

Tip: Go back and refine your edges afterward with the bandsaw and the sander!

Step 6: 6. Lay Out Your Pieces

If you are using spray paint, go outside and lay about ten feet of paper on the ground. Use sticks or thin strips of wood to keep the pieces from sticking to the paper. Lay out all of the pieces in the exact order that they were on the rod.

When you are done painting one side, turn all of the pieces the same direction so that they stay in order.

Tip: It is very important that the pieces are all facing the same way they were while they were assembled. This will make it easier to re-assemble it after.

Step 7: 7. Paint

This is when you get to be creative!

Choose as many colors as you would like and paint the pieces!

Spray paint is ideal for this because it allows you to ombré your colors together. It also dries faster than other paints.
