This pet collar is great because it's soft, stylish, and also functional! You even get to personalize your fabric colors and the shape for the pendant hanging off of the collar!

Materials You'll Need:
At least 25x5 inches of fabric for the collar
At least 12x10 inches of fabric for the pendant
Thread that matches your fabric colors
A 10 ounce bag of fiber-fill stuffing
A pair of 3/4 inch snaps
A 23 millimeter lobster clasp

Tools You'll Need:
Scissors
A measuring tool (and a calculator)
A sewing machine
Pins (for sewing)
A sewing needle

Step 1: How to Determine the Right Length of Fabric to Use for Your Pet Collar

A) Measure the neck of your pet (I did it in inches).
B) Add 7.8 to that number (add 19.8 if you're working with centimeters). This adds enough length so that the collar is still the right size after you've finished sewing it.
C) Write down this number because it will be the length of the rectangle that you will cut out of your fabric.
D) The width for all sized pets is 4.2 inches, or 10.7 centimeters, and you should write this down next to your length measurement to use later.

Step 2: Making the Collar

A) Cut a rectangle out of the fabric that you want to use for the collar, using your length and width mesurements.
B) Fold the rectangle in half, the long way with the colorful side facing inward, and pin it together on the side opposite the folded one.
***If you want to add a loop for attaching a leash continue using these steps, but if you just want a decorative collar skip to step G.
C) Cut a 1x2 inch rectangle out of the fabric you are using for the collar.
D) Fold both of the long sides to meet in the middle, and then fold the piece in half, the long way.
E) Put a pin along this piece and use a sewing machine to sew right down the middle of it (the long way). Then fold the piece in half (the short way) to make the loop.
F) Go to the larger piece of fabric that you just folded and position and pin the loop in the middle of the edge opposite the fold, in between the two fabric layers, and with the loop facing the fold so the ends barely show out of the edge.
G) Use a sewing machine to sew along the pinned side 1/4 inch away from the edge (and through the ends of the loop if you added it).
H) Turn the tube you've just made right-side-out. Then make a mark 1.5 inches away from each end.
I) Stuff the tube in between those marks, and then use a sewing machine to sew the tube closed at each mark (the short way).
J) Fold the open edges of the tube inward 1/8 inch and use a sewing machine to sew 1/16 inch away from the edge along that fold.

Step 3: Adding the Snaps & the Loop

A) Take one half of a snap and use a handheld needle to sew it onto the middle of the section at the end of the collar. Be sure to loop around each hole 3 times to make a secure hold.
B) Take the other half of the snap and sew it in the same fashion onto the other end of the collar. Be careful that it's on the other side of the main seam going down the collar so that when you bend the collar into a circle (not a teardrop shape) the snaps will be facing each other.
C) Cut a 1x2 inch rectangle out of the fabric you are using for the collar. Next fold both of the long sides to meet in the middle, and then fold the piece in half the long way.
D) Put a pin along this piece and use a sewing maching to sew down the middle of it (the long way). This will be the loop.
E) Cut a 1x1.5 inch rectangle out of that same fabric. Next use a handheld needle to sew a 1/4 inch end of the loop piece onto the back left short side of the rectangle you cut out, and then sew the other end of the loop piece onto the back right short side of the rectangle to make a loop. (See the photo of the rectangle with a loop at the top.)
F) Place the fabric rectangle with the loop onto the collar end behind the rounder shaped snap. The loop should be facing the opposite side of the main seam and the rectangle should look a little smaller than the area that it's placed in.
G) Use a handheld needle to sew around the edges of the rectangle to attach it to the collar.

Step 4: Making the Pendant

A) Choose a shape that you want your pendant to look like. A shape that doesn't have many skinny spots or very sharp points is easiest to make. Then draw it on a piece of paper, 5x5 inches or less, and cut it out of the paper exactly at the edges. For examples look at the photos on the first page.
B) Pin the cut out shape onto your second color of fabric. Next, cut an oval of fabric around the shape, making sure to leave an extra inch of room between the edge of the paper and where you're cutting the fabric. Then repeat step B so that you have two fabric ovals.
C) Pin the two pieces of fabric together with the colors facing each other. Then pin the paper shape on top of them both.

D) Cut a piece of the fabric that's 1x4 inches.
E) Fold both of the long sides to meet in the middle, and then fold the piece in half, the long way. Next, put pins along this piece and use a sewing machine to sew right down the middle of it (the long way). This should look exactly like the loop you made earlier except longer.
F) Feed the jewelery hook onto the middle of this strip and then bend the strip in half to make a big loop.
G) Position and pin your loop in between the two fabric layers, in the middle of the paper outline, and with the two ends poking 1/2 inch out of the top of your paper shape (not the oval).

H) Choose a starting point on the edge of the paper shape that's on your fabric and sew right along the edge of the paper and through the loop ends. Stop when you're 1 inch away from passing over your starting point; be sure to keep the hook loop in the middle of your shape so that it doesn't get attached in places other than the top.
I) Stop and trim all of the excess material around the seam, making sure to trim extra close to the seam at all of the corners. But be careful that you leave an extra 1/4 inch of excess material near the 1 inch gap.
J) Turn your shape right side out through the 1 inch gap and stuff it.
K) Fold the open edges inward and use a handheld needle to sew the opening closed.
L) Hook the pendant onto the loop beneath the snaps on the collar and enjoy!
