Introduction: Compact Spooling Machine

This Compact Spooling Machine was designed primarily for spooling 3D printer filaments.

However, it can be adapted to spool or curl other materials like wire or rope.

Most of the parts are 3D printed.

LIST OF PARTS

1. Spooler frame

2. Spool base

3. Spool top

4. Spool coupler (x2)

5. Spool gear

6. Motor gear

7. Winch gear

8. Winch screw

9. Winch pawl

10. Pawl housing

11. Rollers (x2)

12. Roller clamps (x2)

13. Winch pawl clamp (right)

14. Winch pawl clamp (left)

15. Filament guide

16. Car wiper motor

17. Bearings: KG 608 ZZ (x8)

18. Pawl guide rods: 3.25mm diameter, 16cm long (x2)

19. Threaded shafts: size 13, 21cm long (x4)

NB: Parts 1-15 in the above list are 3D printed.

The STL files are attached here:

LIST OF MATERIALS

1. Shoe pad 11.5cm x 13cm (x2)

2. Screws: size 5 , 15mm long (x8)

3. Bushings: for threaded rod, size 13 (x4)

4. Nuts for threaded shaft, size 13 (x2)

5. Washers: for screws, size 5 (x16)

6. Small screws: about 2mm diameter (x2)

7. Screws: size 10, 20mm long

NB: please, add some extra to each of the materials listed above. Some might get damaged or lost during construction and installation. It’s safer to have some leftovers than to be in shortage.

Step 1: WELD BOLT TO MOTOR SHAFT

1. Screw in a size 13 nut onto the shaft of the wiper motor (the wiper motor I have has a size 13 shaft thread)

2. Weld the size 13 nut to the shaft of the motor

NB: If your own wiper motor has a size 10 threaded shaft, don't worry. Use a size 10 nut to weld, and then convert the CAD file for wiper gear to fit size 10 nut.

Step 2: FILING

File off about 1.5mm depth along the length of
the threaded shafts to create a flat surface on the shafts

Step 3: PAD THE ROLLERS

Attach the shoe pad to the rollers using shoe gum
or glue

Step 4: SPOOL ASSEMBLY

Align and insert the slots on the spool top to
the hooks on the spool base.

Step 5: MOUNT FRAME BEARINGS

Insert the bearings to their housings on the
spool frame

Step 6: MOUNT CLAMP BEARINGS

Insert the bearings to their housings on the
roller clamps

Step 7: INSERT WIPER GEAR LOCK SCREWS

Insert two small screws to opposite sides of
the wiper gear

Step 8: INSERT GUIDE RODS

Insert the pawl guide rods to the winch pawl
clamp (right)

Step 9: INSTALL LEFT PAWL CLAMP

Attach the winch pawl clamp (left)

Step 10: INSTALL WINCH SCREW

Insert the winch screw into one of the threaded
shafts, through the winch bearing housing

Step 11: INSTALL WINCH GEAR

Insert the winch gear

Step 12: INSTALL WIPER MOTOR

Attach the wiper motor through the three holes
on the spool frame, using size 10 screws

Step 13: INSERT WIPER GEAR

1. Insert the wiper gear onto the size 13 nut on the shaft of the motor

2. Lock in position with the two small screws

Step 14: PAWL ASSEMBLY

Insert the winch pawl into the pawl housing

Step 15: MOUNT THE PAWL ASSEMBLY

Mount the pawl-house assembly to the guide rods through the slots on the right wall of the spool frame.

Step 16: MOUNT SPOOL

Attach the spool to the spool hooks and install
this assembly through one of the threaded shafts in this order: shaft – right frame wall – short bushing – right spool hook – spool – left spool hook – short bushing – spool gear – left frame wall – size 13 washer – two size 13 nuts.

Step 17: MOUNT ROLLER CLAMP

Mount the roller clamp using the small crews
and washers

Step 18: MOUNT ROLLERS

Install the rollers through one of the threaded shafts.

Step 19: INSTALL FILAMENT GUIDE

Insert the filament guide at the centre of the
frame.

Step 20: CONNECT TO SUPPLY

Connect the wiper motor to the power supply and
speed controller.

Step 21: HAVE FUN MAKING!
