Converse-like Slippers - the Spiderman Edition!

Autumn is upon us and Winter is coming (yeah I've to stop saying that.. Thank you Games of Thrones...) and what is better than feeling your feet so warm on a cold and snowy night? Plus, style isn't optional when you can choose the Super-warmth of a Super-hero...! And the Super-hero we are talking about.....? SPIDERMAN!

I am not a real fan of Spiderman, as a girl I guess I prefer Thor ( you can imagine why...) but I was that kind of girl I preferred watching Spiderman and Batman cartoons rather than Barbie or whatever when I was child anyway. My brother is a real fan of Spiderman, and so I made him as a gift these fantastic slippers Converse style! You cannot imagine his face when I surprised him lefting these on his desk the night before when he was asleep... Sometimes this kind of joy and enthusiasm fulfills me and make me want to make more and more gifts for family and friends! I discovered that I can really crochet all night...! Oh my... I have to quit drinking coffee for a while..!

Of course these slippers weren't an easy task. First of all, there isn't a tutorial on the Internet about adult size converse slippers, only in baby size and this was the first problem, how to convert baby size in adult. Second, there aren't (or at least I couldn't find) patterns for making a web-like style on the slippers, so I had to experiment a little bit with stiches and yarns and hooks etc. etc.. After many failures I finally found the pattern that suited me and satisfied me and I'm happy to share it with you...!

Step 1: Supplies For... Superheroes!

Yarn:

• 100 gr (about 150m) thick blue yarn
• 100gr thick red yarn
• 100gr thick white yarn
• 50gr (about 50-60m) black yarn
• 100gr of thick yarn for the sole (color of your choice but I advice deep blue or black or...both!)


Hooks: 6.5mm and 4.5mm

Needle with rounded edge

White and blue laces

and... Patience...!


The pattern I used isn't difficult, if you are a beginner it will work for you. Moreover, if I can do it, you can do it, I'm not a pro after all!

Step 2: Starting From the Bottom...

.... which is the soles...!

I made another Instructable for the soles of the slippers so that this one would be more clear to read and follow.

I made slippers size 7 so keep this in mind if you want a different size!

Once you're done with the sole, next step is to work the white part of the Converse style slipper, which I don't know how it's named but I will refer it as the ''loafer''. The pattern is very easy and you only need to know how to chain and single crochet. In the pattern I will refer to chain as CH and to single crochet as SC.

1. Start from the middle of the heel (you can count stiches but I'd rather just fold it in two and see were the middle is) and add the white yarn
2. First row: CH1 and SC in every stich around to complete a row
3. Second row: CH1 and SC in every stich around in back loops only
4. **Third row: CH1 ans SC in every stich around in both loops
5. Fourth and fifth row: continue from ** untill you complete the fifth row

Step 3: The Shoe High Top

To make the zig-zag pattern of the top you have to work with stiches multiples of 7 + 2 stiches for each end. This means that you must count 36 stiches from the middle of the heel right an left (total of 7x5=35 stiches) +2= 72 stiches across and place markers. Keep in mind that I calculated 72 stiches for size 7, if you will make smaller/bigger size you will need to use less/more stiches

Abbreviations:

CH: Chain

SC: Single Crochet

ST: Stich

SLST: Slip Stich


I started with the blue yarn in the beginning and I made 3 rows of blue then 3 rows of red, 1 row of black, 2 rows of blue, 2 rows of red, 1 row of black.




• 3 rows of blue:

1. First row: start from the right marker, CH1, SC2 in same ST, *SC5, SLST1, SC5 and SC3 in same ST. Continue from * untill you reach the left marker
2. Second row: Turn your work and SC2 in same ST, **SC5, SLST1, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue from ** untill right marker
3. Third row: SC2 in same ST, ***SC5, SLST1, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue untill left marker.


# At the end and beginning of each row remember to SLST1 to make a decreasing pattern right and left where you will place the laces



• Add red yarn and make 3 rows:

1. First row: start from the left marker (where you left the blue yarn), CH1, SC2 in same ST, *SC5, SLST1, SC5 and SC3 in same ST. Continue from * untill you reach the right marker
2. Second row: Turn your work and SC2 in same ST, **SC5, SLST1, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue from ** untill left marker
3. Third row: SC2 in same ST, ***SC5, SLST1, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue untill right marker.


# At the end and beginning of each row remember to SLST1 to make a decreasing pattern right and left where you will place the laces



• Make 1 row of black just SC across from right side to left side




• 2 rows of blue:

1. First row: start from the left marker (where you left the black yarn), CH1, SC2 in same ST, *SC5, SLST1, SC5 and SC3 in same ST. Continue from * untill you reach the right marker
2. Second row: Turn your work and SC2 in same ST, **SC5, SLST1, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue from ** untill left marker


# At the end and beginning of each row remember to SLST1 to make a decreasing pattern right and left where you will place the laces



The 2 ending rows of red will be decreasing rows



• 2 rows of red:

1. First row: start from the left marker (where you left the blue yarn), CH1, SC2 in same ST, *SC5, SLST2, SC5 and SC3 in same ST. Continue from * untill you reach the right marker
2. Second row: Turn your work and SC2 in same ST, **SC5, SLST2, SC5, SC3 in same ST. Continue from ** untill left marker


# At the end and beginning of each row remember to SLST1 to make a decreasing pattern right and left where you will place the laces



• Make 1 row of black just SC across from right side to left side but now you have to start from the very 1st blue row so that you can make space for laces


At the end you will have 11 rows of alternating colors.

Step 4: Making the Tongue and Black Lines

Abbreviations:

CH: chain

SC: single crochet

HDC: half double crochet

DC: double crochet

SLST: slip stich

ST: stich

For the tongue:

1. Make a magic ring: CH2, DC10 in the ring. Pull the yarn and make a semicircle not circle!
2. CH2 and turn
3. HDC1, HDC2 in same ST, HDC1, HDC2 in same ST all around
4. SC across
5. One more time HDC1, HDC2 in same stich around
6. Join blue yarn and make 4 rows
7. Join red yarn and make 4 rows
8. Alternate colours untill you reach the desiderated length of the tongue.
9. For the border of the tongue with red yarn: SC4, DC3 in same ST for 2 stiches, SC4. SLST and fasten off.
10. Finish with a row of black yarn to give a nice contrast. Just SC around.

Sew the tongue to the loafer sewing the front loop of the loafer and back loop of tongue

Making the black lines:

For this step I used the smaller hook (4.5mm) so that it would be easier to crochet around the stiches.

Middle line: Start at the height of the 1st blue row which attaches to the loafer and SC across, having your yarn inside the slipper

Across line: make the across black line starting wherever you want and making sure you cover the sewing marks

Step 5: Making the ''Converse" Badge

When I made the badge, instead of making the classic star, I thought about making a spider, since these are Spiderman slippers after all...!! The badges give definetely a nice final touch!

For the badge:

1. Make a magic ring
2. CH2 and DC12 inside the ring then pull to make a circle
3. SC around, SLST and fasten off. Leave 15cm of yarn for sewing
4. Sew the spider with black yarn as shown in the photos. Try to alignate the spider helping your self with the needle
5. Sew it on the side of the slipper: right slipper sew right, left slipper sew left

Step 6: Final Touches

For a softer walk, I inserted insoles and for prevent the slippers from slipping (humoristic right? The slippery slippers which slip ahahahah..) I made small marbles with a glue gun using black glue.

And all that is left is to put your laces on and try your slippers... oh wait! I meant to fall in love with your new slippers...! Great slippers for great Superheroes....!!!!
