Introduction: Convert Fox's Festive Biscuit Tin Into Luxury Coin BUNC Pack Store

The Royal Mint have been creating 50p coins at Christmas time featuring Raymond Briggs' The Snowman since 2018. From 2020 the Royal mint have had both coloured versions and plain cupro versions. This tin will store up to 9 RM Bunc packs.

This project converts the Fox's Biscuits Festive Biscuit tin with The Snowman on it into a fine collectors tin for BUNC packs.

Supplies

1 x Fox's Festive Biscuit Selection Tin (empty)

1 x Card Cereal Box

2 a4 sheets of Navy/Royal Blue Self adhesive felt (or part of a roll) Available from Amazon etc.

Festive Ribbon 26cm long

Square of coloured paper

Step 1: Strip the Card and Mark the Template

Find the seam of the cereal box and open the box down the side.

Using the pdf template either print it out and stick it onto the card or draw out the pattern on the card. You will need two of each patterns. I needed two Cereal boxes but if you have large family sized boxes you may be able to do it all from one box.

Step 2: Cut Out and Assemble the Pieces

Cut out the parts - the dotted lines are folds and the solid lines are cuts. Look through this section before you cut out to be familiar with the patterns.

Pre-fold the dotted lines. I use a folding board but of you don't have one, use a ruler and score the lines with a blunt knife or the wrong side of the scissors.

Glue along the long flap ( I Like UHU but normal PVA is fine) and fold the boxes together. Note: If you fold the box flat you should be able to stick the flap more easily.

The sides are now complete - only one glue join!

The top and bottom have curved corners. Cut the tabs and curve the end round and stick it to the flap as shown. You should now have two completed top and bottom pieces. NOTE: once glue put the box into the tin at an angle and swing it into position with the curves facing the curved corners of the tin as shown. This will hold the ends in while they dry.

Step 3: Put the Boxes in the Tin

Once the glue is dry, put the boxes into the tin. Remember that the 40mm side is the depth and the 30mm side is the top of the sides.

Try dropping a BUNC pack into the gap in the middle to make sure its going to fit. There should be a little extra space all around. (some of this will be taken up by the felt)

Note: BUNC Packs with the envelopes inside are a tighter fit so use one of these if you have them to test. Packs with a flap will be placed so that the flap folds under the pack.

Step 4: Add the Felt

With the first piece of felt cut four pieces 60 x 60mm. Make a slit 10mm long in the middle of two opposite sides to make flaps. Cut one set pf flaps diagonally so that when folded in the flaps wont cover each other. Without removing the backing try the pieces for fit and adjust as necessary.

Stick the four pieces across the vertical corners between the sides and the top/bottom and fold the flaps up onto the card at the top and side and down to the floor of the tin. This will fix the boxes together and prevent any card showing at the corners.

With the second piece of felt upside down, mark on the backing paper a rectangle. If you are using a roll of felt you can cut 232 x 210. If using sheets that are not quite as big you will cut 232mm by as wide as the sheet will allow. Mark an X shape that is central and starts 38mm from the top of the long side and is 132 from top to bottom and 172 wide. Cut the X and offer the sheet, with backing intact up to the box. push the middle (X) down into the gap and ensure that no card will be showing when its stuck in place.

Cut a curve in the corners to suit - its ok to be a little large as you can shove it under the tin edge at the end,

If using the sheets, cut a strip that is larger than the shortfall in width and stick it along the bottom edge(having cut the curved corners first) - this will be partly covered by the bigger sheet.

Now peel off the backing at the top of the felt and place it tightly along the top lip of the tin on the card, smoothing it out as you go. Continue to peel back the backing sheet and smooth the top face as you go.

Once the top face is stuck in place, take one edge of the hole at a time and smooth the felt into place down the sides of the boxes to bottom of the tin and the smooth out onto the tin floor.

Step 5: Final Touches

Cut a nice piece of ribbon 26cm long.

Fold one end, which will be used as a tab to lift the Bunc Packs, and use a piece of double sided tape to stick it to itself, tucking in the very end of the exposed ribbon to prevent any fraying. Attach a piece of double sided tape to the last inch of the other end of the ribbon.

Fold the last inch of ribbon so that the tape is away from the ribbon and place it on the bottom of the tin in the centre as shown. This will be used to lift your Bunc Packs out of the hole.

Cut a rectangle of paper or card to fit the bottom of the hole and stick it into the tin covering the inch of taped ribbon but leaving the rest of the ribbon available.

Now you can fill the tin with Bunc packs and add any other finishing touches you like.

We added some printed Card graphics to fancy it up further - we covered the text on the outside of the Lid with our own graphics (see Pics 4 and 5 above) and inserted an inside lid graphic (pic 5). Finally, we added "50p Coin Collection" on the top of the foam at the bottom of the hole.

These graphics are digitally printed and are available directly from us.

Step 6: Alternative Designs for Coins in This Tin

An alternative use of this tin is to use it to store Silver Proof Snowmen in their acrylic Blocks. It can only hold four at a time and, in this instance, we decided to fit them in WITHOUT their boxes. Our next iteration will hold the bocks in their Boxes.

I have included a pdf template - the noted measurements are accurate but the actual printed size may vary slightly due to scaling errors - just check that the measurements of yours match the numbers and not the picture.

The assembly is very similar to the previous make but we have reduced the sizes of the sides and added a cross piece in the middle made from FoamBoard coated in thin craft foam and then covered in felt. In the end we felt that although the ribbon idea worked well for the Bunc packs, it didn't really work for the Silver proofs so we modified the cross piece to have two "finger holes in the horizontal piece. You can see this in the first picture.

As you can see, reusing is better than recycling and these tins look really great! I hope you have fun creating something similar to this - let us see you pictures when your done! Happy Crafting!
