Introduction: Cool Chicks, Hot Coop

"Why do most chicken coops have only two doors, if they had four doors they would be a sedan"

I love my Gals.

And having your own Backyard Chicken Coop is great for getting rid of scraps, keeping the yard clean (well of weeds and bugs) and having fresh eggs every morning.

But Living in Las Vegas, has some disadvantages, mainly the summer heat which can get to 112°(F)

So being Geek I am, I came up with a Solution.

Step 1: Play 'Misty' for Me

I decided I would make part of the coop 'Air Conditioned' for the gals, where I would use a mister to keep an area of the coop wet and cool, this also would make the ground moist

(not wet, I will go into the reason why further on)

It would evaporate and keep the area cool when the mister was turned off.

Step 2: Water / Filter / Valve

You can do this with a garden hose and a mister attachment, I wanted
something a bit more permanent as well as techie. I purchased most parts at Home depot, some PVC piping, mister nozzles, a solenoid 12v Value, etc.

12V (DC) is safe to work with, and flexible you can run it using cheaper wire from any power source.

I Put a PVC "T" from the feed to my sprinkler system, added a Drain and a Valve, ran it into a filter, then across the back of the coop with another valve

Step 3: Building the Thing

Installed the solenoid valve and then added Three "T's with 1/8" taps from the Mister adapters

(I later capped two of the taps, the area was getting over watered and muddy)

You don't want the ground to get wet and muddy, You would get wasps attracted to the mud, as well as the chickens walking around in mud.

Step 4: Electronics and Such

I purchased on ebay a few electronic 12V timers, as well as a 12v 'reverse' thermostat

(Turns on when hot, turns off when cool)

The reason was I didn't want the mister to turn on till it was above 90° which happened around 11AM,

but I also did not want the misters to be on constantly that would make the area muddy, so the timer was used to turn them on for 30 mins, then turn them off for 30 mins, The reason I added the thermostat was that there where some cool days so those days I did not want it misting

Step 5: Party in the U.S.A

Because the ground was moist, uneaten seeds started sprouting, and worms where attracted to the area, the gals partied and stayed cool!

and this is my 50TH INSTRUCTABLE!!!!!!
