Intro: Copper Dragon Egg

Hello,

When I have seen the rextorn video, I decide to make my own copper dragon egg!

I make no photos of the egg construction :(, but the proccess is exatly the same as the rextorn video.

I will do photos for my next copper egg.

At the end and after 60 hours of work, the copper egg weighs 2,7 kg for 23 cm.

What you will need :

- Styrofoam egg 20 cm like this

- 4 copper plates 20cm*40cm*0.5 mm

- Gas torch like this

- Tin

- Sheet metal hand like this

- black patina for metals

- Metal polish like this

- Cement bag

- One plastic container 40cm*30cm*30cm

STEP 1: Do the Egg Print

With the cement, one container, and half of the styrofoam egg do the egg print.

But the cement and some water in the container.

Wait 3-4 min and use the styrofoamto make the egg print.

Wait 10-12 hours after.

STEP 2: Make the Copper Egg

Unfortunatly I take no photo of this...But it is not so difficult.

You will have to anneal the cooper.

You will find a lot of video on internet like this

Use the gas torch to heat copper and when it is red, put it quickly in water. Then you can use a hammer and the cement egg print to shape the egg.

You will have to repeat the process (anneal + hammer) a lot of time to get and half of copper egg.

When you have one half, let's go to make the other half.

When you have the two half, you can soldering them with some tin.

Weldone, You have make the most difficult!

STEP 3: Make the Scale

Now the proccess is exactly the same than Rextorn video

Before doing this, I make an example with the styrofoam and some paper.

I use 3 cuts of scale :

- 2cm*2cm => red paper

- 3cm*3cm => purpple paper

- 4cm*4cm => green paper

Use the sheet metal hand to cut the copper.

Use the hammer and the cement egg print to give some curve to the scale. Be carreful use some small piece of fabric because you don't want scratch the scale :)

Use the hand sander to make some curve on the scale.

STEP 4: Soldering the Scale on the Copper Egg

The proccess is exactly the same than Rextorn video

I use then gas torch to do the soldering.

I begin with the 2*2 sacle, then some 3*3, then all the 4*4, and then the rest of 3*3 scale.

My attempt with the styrofoam and some paper was very hepfull....

STEP 5: Finish the Copper Egg!

Before finish the egg, make a lot of example. You really doesn't want make a big mistake!!!!

For the black patina read this thread (in french).

1 => Use white vinegar too clean the egg.

2 => Use the black patina (I recommend to make a test before!!!!)

3 => Polish with the hand sander (Test the polish before used it on the egg)

4 => Use the metal polish (Again make a test before)

STEP 6: Find a Beautiful Box

This is beautiful! I would love a bowl full of these on my coffee or dining room table. What a great conversation piece.

I had been hoping you'd made this out of styro and craft foam, then faux painted it using rub-n-buff, ala cosplay weapons -- though that would be nowhere near as robust. But, I think I see some new projects in my future...

The most difficult is to make the cooper egg. I think you can use a 0.3 mm copper plate instead of the 0.5 mm plate.

It will be easier to make the egg and robust enough to welding scales.

The 0.5 mm copper plate was good but a little too rigid.

Perhaps with 0.3 mm there is no need to anneal the plate...just need a good hammer :)

Please do not steal photographs from someone else's video! Looks like every singel one of the copperwork photographs starting at Step 2 were stolen straight from the Rextorn video you mentioned.

It is NOT OK to pass off someone else's work as you own.

He stole the guy's screen shots from his video. Nothing seen is his so how can you say his egg is beautiful. It's not his!

So you took a Styrofoam egg, pinned some post-it notes to it, then took 10 screenshots from someone else's video and called it your Instructable?

Did you even make this yourself?

Yes I make it myself!

But unfortunatly I didn't take photo of the process. I realize at the end that I can post the process :(

If you doubt, try to find on internet a cooper egg with a 30 cm flat ruler, or a cement egg print :)
