Introduction: Copper-wood Pinching Salt Well (steampunk)

Tired of looking for that little spoon that gets lost and makes a table Salt Well obsolete I decided to Re-design the old Salt Well concept.

Instead of a spoon that can get lost (and over salts) I placed a small basin to hold a (portion friendly) pinch of salt.

Made out of  Oak Aged fell-wood branch and the Ribbon Copper winding of a large Transformer.

                                               The  Pinching Salt Well.

It differes in design from traditional Salt Wells in that it stores the salt in a copper lid covered wooden vat.
The salt is delivered and always available to the Pinching Basin via a Crank on the back of the well.
The Crank is reinforced by a back-plate that has been riveted to the back of the well.
The basin has a support leg for those overaggressive salt snatches.
The basin, crank,back-plate, and Lid are made from hammer formed copper ribbon some have been joined with silver soldier.

1.Find an appropriate piece of wood.
2. Measure your height and cut 1/2" off the bottom for the base
3.Drill a hole1/4" down  vertically into and through the body
4.use the hole to insert a coping saw blade and saw till you trim out the interior of the body leaving a wooden pipe. use a Wood Rasp and Sandpaper to get your final form.
5.glue the base back to this pipe to give you the Salt Well vat.
6.pre form the back-plate for the Crank tap the holes for your "rivets" (short pieces of wire) use a Lead free solider for all work.
7.tap the drain for the salt at the bottom of the vat using an angle that places the crank thru the back-plate
8. measure, cut, and from the Crank by beating a contoured tip onto a piece of wire ( this gives it screw-like drive to push the salt out onto the Pinching Basin. I placed a stopper on the crank to keep it from sliding down and out of the drain hole.
9.form the basin and other metal parts that need forging ( Beat with a hammer and rub with sweat from your brow) the basin was soldered to a piece of wire that  formed a support leg, the wire wraps around the basin and continues into the base of the vat bracing the basin against the Well
10.cure with salt or kiln dry. I put it in the oven on 150° for 4hrs( cracked open) to draw all the moisture out of the wood.
11. use Linseed or food safe paraffin to seal the outside wood
12. use a pinch of Salt to season to your liking
   Enjoy!
