Introduction: Countersink From Screwdriver Bit
Ever needed a countersink when you could not find one ? Or you could not a achieve a good countersink with one you already own ? well you can take an old screwdriver bit and turn it into a countersink to use on your next project !
I used a cheap bit as its a lot easier to work with and sharpen but a good quality bit may hold a better edge.
I found it worked really well with an impact driver a drill driver, high speed low speed, it worked quite well even for large headed screws, dry for yourself to see if you can create one just like mine or even better ! If you do make one be sure to send me a photo I would love to see it !
Check out the video I made here
Step 1: Cut...and..grind....
Cut the end of the bit with a hacksaw then grind a point with the belt sander, I then made the point blunt to make it easier when we add the cutting edge later.
Step 2: Filing the Cutter and Testing
I filed a flute along the ground edge there is no particular angle for this so just try, experiment and see what works best!, then sharpened it then it was ready to use !

Hi - sorry the F/B page has been removed (by me) but after two days of it being there my comments button had been disabled so rather than get into trouble with the Instructables team I removed it and my button seems to be working again.
Still happy to hear from you - just type Hobby builder and look for the lightbulbs.
Really liked this Instruct able as my driver bits wear out from time to time (especially if I lend them) - a simple tweak with my grinder would give a cool, custom countersink for my skateboards n stuff.
Cheers - DZ.

Ok first I cut off a hardened bit that costs 50 cents using a hack saw dulling a $3 blade. Then I burn through two batteries on my cordless drill 20 cents to charge batteries. Then I wear a groove in my belt sander belt $12.00 I rip off the skin on my knuckles while filing the bit. 50 cents for bandaids
OR
I go to Harbor freight and spend 99 cents (79 cents with 20%off coupon)
or a couple of bucks at Lowes, Home depot, Walmart, Kmart Target or any other store that sells tools.

The pure joy of MacGuyvering your own solution is what this is all about.
It's actually a pretty nice way of reusing those cheese grade screwdriver bits that everyone seems to bundle with their tools these days. Wait till they're useless, and give 'em another lease of life.

what is a countersink?

A counter sink is used to prepare a hole to receive a screw, it ensures the head of the screw is flush with the work piece, using a countersink can prevent the wood from splitting.
If you have any more questions about anything I would love to help :)
