Introduction: Cozy Snowman Baby Blanket

Winter is arriving and what a better  than a cozy snowman blanket for your baby!!
Here you''ll findstep by step instructions to make your own.

Step 1: Materials:

For a Blanket :           29" by 38" white minky fabric
29" by 38" light blue 100% cotton with a little design.
For appliques use spare scraps of cotton fabric in orange, blue, black, brown,
                                                                                            white, green colors.
                                      Cotton batting
Heat n bond   iron on adhesive
                                       Matching sewing thread
                                       60"  light blue ric rac
                                       Sewing machine
                                       Cutting mat
                                       Rotary cuter
                                       Fabric scissor
                                       Pins
                                       Pencil and tracing paper
                                       Steam iron
                                        Ruler

Step 2: Drawing, Cutting and Piecing

Draw each motif onto a tracing paper. I recommend to go over it with marker to make your lines bold.
Cut the shapes out. Them trace nose, eye, mouth, arms, pine tree and trunk tree backwards on the paper side of your Heat'n'Bond .Place your HnB paper side up on top of your fabric (wrong side up). Iron the two pieces together. Now ironed  and cut out the shape with a sharp scissor .
About snowman hat, scarf  and snow to be use on tree, cut it out in cotton fabric, and kipping the same shape cut it in cotton batting as shown in the picture. This technique will give a nice and soft padding effect after sewing.

Step 3: Blanket in Process !

Place and pin a Ric Rac  from one side to the other side of the front pane. Make two  curves lines pretending they are hills. Approximately one of them 9" from the bottom and the other one 12" from the top. Do not forget that it has to be a gentle curve line.
Using a matching thread  sew with straight stitch, after that press very well the top of the fabric, it is an essential process for any sewing project.

Step 4: Appliques

The Body of the snowman isn't it fused, for that reason pin very well all around it.  I recommend to pin, pin, pin it every 1". Minky fabric stretches easily as it goes through the sewing machine. The more pins you have holding the easier it will be to keep the shape of your design. Attach with a zig zag stitch.
Next place the hat and scarf also pin it to hold well, remember that this shapes are cutting on cotton batting. Sew with a zig zag stitch
Take your time positioning the rest of the motif. When your are happy with their placing fuse using a pressing cloth. If you have an small pieces to fuse carefully do it with the corner of the iron or use an small iron.
Use a close zig zag  stitch, take time as you need to go around intricate shapes, and will need to change thread for each fabric or motif. Once the pine tree is already done apply the white part ( snow) onto this, pin and finish with a zig zag as well the hat and the scarf.
Sew each snowflake whit an straigt stitch
On the hat, scarf and the snow on the tree finish it with a top stitching with a contrasting color of thread. For the snow on the tree use white color thread

Step 5: Joining and Finishing

Press the front fabric and lined up with a minky white fabric and trimmed the excess. One of the detail I love about this blanket are the rounded  corners ( I use as a  template a round plastic lid)
Pin all around the blanket and start sewing all seams allowance  1/4 inch. to 1/2 inch. from the edge. Use white color thread.
Use a back stitch just before you end. You will need to keep an opening in the fabric so that you can fold the blanket inside out.
Them sew the opening in the blanket by hand or by machine. Finish with a top stitch in light blue thread  color  1/2 inch. from the edge.
Trimmed and press your blanket and enjoy!!!!
