Introduction: Powder Coating a Urethane Resin Casting

Overview

You can use mica based powders to powder coat a urethane resin casting. Powder coating can be used for creating metallic effects as well.

Materials Used in this Tutorial

  1. Smooth-Cast® 300
  2. Cast Magic®
  3. Mold Max® 30
  4. So-Strong® Colorants
  5. Paint Brush
  6. Mixing Containers
  7. Mixing Sticks

Step 1: Step 1: Preparing Mold for Resin Casting

First take pearlescent powder and apply it with a soft brush onto the surface of a silicone mold. Thoroughly coat all surfaces of the mold. Pay particular attention to deep detail and the mold side walls. Remove any excess powder by gently tapping the inverted mold.

Step 2: Step 2: Dispensing, Mixing, and Casting Resin

Carefully measure out part B of the resin, then pour it into the mixing container. Add a few drops of urethane tint to Part B and thoroughly mix. Now carefully measure out part A of the resin, pour it into the mixing container and mix with Part B.

Carefully pour the mixed resin into a single spot in the mold. Allow the material to slowly flow around the mold, completely filling the mold cavity. Allow the resin to cure fully.

Step 3: Step 3: Finishing Piece

Once cured, remove the casting from the mold.

Many different effects are possible with this technique.

Have you tried using glow in the dark (not black light) powder? I’m tempted to try butworry it’ll be a waste. If I get the courage I’d like to try it but sure would love to find guidance.

Thank you for your ible. I love the open mouth.
