Making Glove Molds:

When making a glove mold, we use a two-part silicone process to make a safe and durable personal massager! Using silicone to make glove molds allows for individuals to make creative and unique shapes, that can then be used multiple times in the future to produce several massagers. In addition to using this How-To, you will need to attain some materials that will guide you in creating a silicone glove mold and its completed form.

Types of Silicone

There are three types of silicone that we typically use in our research and development at Comingle. However, we use the two-part silicone Dragon Skin 10 Fast to fabricate our actual glove molds. Dragon Skin is the fancier silicone of the three, and is known for its ability to be extremely durable and stretchy, providing a perfect material in which we can create our glove molds with!

Additionally, we will also use Silicone 18 close to the end of this article. This type of silicone is harder than the Dragon Skin, and we use it to create the actual vibrator form that comes from the glove mold made with Dragon Skin.

Tools and Materials

  • Dragon Skin 10 Fast Silicone
  • Silicone 18
  • Disposable Popsicle Sticks
  • Disposable Gloves
  • 3oz. Dixie Bathroom Paper Cups (for mixing silicone)
  • Modeling Clay
  • Object to Create Glove Mold Shape (modeling clay will be used with this object)
  • 2 Different Colors of Paint
  • Paper Towels
  • Clips (to anchor glove mold)
  • Jar of small beads for measuring volume (we use Thermomorph Pellets that we have lying around)
  • Weight Scale
  • Structure to Hold Glove Mold Upright & In Place (We used galvanized metal duct tubing)
  • Canola Spray Oil (Used as a releasing agent)
  • Baby Powder (for removing glove molds more easily)

Step 1: Creating the Glove Mold

Sculpting Shape of Glove Mold & Sprue

Begin by taking your desired object which you will be using as your primary vibrator shape. We used a smooth hard plastic handle from a screw driver. You will then begin to make a sprue. To make your sprue:

  • Take a basic brown modeling clay to sculpt around the base of your object. Make sure that the modeling clay has a smooth and seamless connection to the object (the handle in the case of a screw driver)
  • Make the sprue's circumference significantly larger than the handle's shape. (This is to avoid future difficulties when using the finished vibrator, such as it accidentally getting stuck or caught.)
  • Smooth out areas of the clay to ensure that the vibrator will have a smooth exterior skin.
  • Continue to use modeling clay to make a large handle, completely covering the remaining parts of the object. This clay handle will be used to mount onto the table.

Step 2: Mounting Sprue to Tabletop

We typically use a lazy Susan in addition to a tabletop surface to evenly distribute our silicone pour. However, using just a table top surface is sufficient if you’re able to access the entire object without having to move it once mounted to your table top surface. Take your object along with its fastened clay sprue, and begin to thumb the clay below the sprue, down onto your surface. Be sure to make a sturdy and steady mount on your tabletop.

Step 3: Preparing Mixture 1 of Dragon Skin

Because Dragon Skin has a relatively fast curing time, we want to make sure that we’ve prepared everything perfectly prior to mixing and pouring. Once you’ve completed the steps above, you’ll then be ready to mix your Dragon Skin silicone. Begin by putting on your disposable gloves to avoid getting sticky silicone on your hands. Also, we usually use a Blue Airlaid paper towel as we work, sticking it in a pocket to easily wipe our messy hands, which helps from getting silicone on all of our tools.

Gather three cups and the disposable popsicle sticks. Add Dragon Skin Silicone Part A to first cup, about 3/4 of the way. Add Dragon Skin Part B to second cup, about 3/4 of the way.In third cup, mix 1:1 ratio of Part A and Part B – use half of Part A’s cup and half of Part B’s cup. Add selected color of paint to third cup’s mixture, about a pinky nail size drop. Mix evenly with the popsicle stick to prepare your silicone pour.

Step 4: Pouring Mixture 1 of Dragon Skin

With your Mixture 1 of Dragon Skin Silicone, begin to pour evenly at the tip (top) of your object. Make sure to cover the entire surface area of your object, including your sprue and base. You may use your popsicle stick to gently guide the silicone, as gravity pulls the silicone down the shaft of your object, creating a pancake at the base of your mounted figure. Make sure to double check that there are no thin layers. Specifically evaluate the tip of the structure, adding more silicone as needed. After covering the entire object, you will then need to set you timer for 10 minutes which will allow your first layer of silicone to cure. You may then use your handheld dryer shortly to harden this first layer, watch out for bubbles!

Step 5: Preparing Mixture 2 of Dragon Skin

With the remaining portions of your Part A & Part B Dragon Skin Silicone, mix the two together evenly. Next, select your second color to add to Mixture 2. You should add approximately a pinky nail size of a drop. Mix evenly with your popsicle stick to prepare your second layer silicone pour.

We use this second color to make sure that we have completely covered our object’s area evenly. If you see that your first color can easily be seen, and is not covered with the second layer, make sure to cover those areas before proceeding. Again, make sure to double check that there are no thin layers. Specifically evaluate the tip of the structure, adding more silicone as needed. You will then need to allow your second layer of silicone to cure. You may then use your handheld dryer shortly to harden the second layer, watch out for bubbles!

We let this glove cure overnight before proceeding to the next step. Realistically it only needs 1.5-2 hours to cure though.

Step 6: Pouring Your Form

Demount Object

First, spray after allowing your glove mold to cure, you will then demount your object by peeling the silicone from the table. Begin removing the glove mold starting at the base of the structure. Silicone is very flexible so you may carefully stretch the silicone, allowing for your object to be removed. By the time you have removed the object from your silicone glove mold, you will have successfully created your glove! You may then use this glove mold to create several personal massager forms by setting up a structure that allows for you to position your glove upright, without crinkling the silicone's shape!

Step 7: Measure Volume

  • Pour thermomorph pellets into the glove mold to assess volume.
  • Take those pellets and pour them into one of the cups to measure for Part A of Silicone 18.
  • Take Part A of Silicone 18 and measure it out to equalize the line that the thermomorph pellets cames to.
  • Weigh Part A on a scale.
  • Mix a 10:1 ratio of Part B of Silicone 18.

Now that you have both Part A and Part B weighed, you will be ready to mix the two. However, before mixing the two, make sure to setup your structure so that it will hold your glove mold upright (we used the galvanized metal tubing)!

  • Step 8: Preparing the Pour

Next, you will take your glove mold and spray/brush on canola oil evenly. The canola oil acts as a releasing agent so that your silicone glove does not adhere to your new silicone that you will be pouring in to create your mold. Remember that silicone mixes with other silicone, so use oil! For the next step, place the glove into the metal tubing upright. Make sure that it is hanging freely, and not crinkled. You can secure the glove by using clips. You will then be setup to pour your Silicone 18 mixture to create your massager's form!

    Step 9: Mix and Pour

Now that you have fully prepared yourself to pour your Silicone 10 into glove mold, you may mix your Part A and Part B of Silicone 18. You may also add your paint to add color to the mixture at this time. But act quick! You have very little time to complete this process as this silicone will start to harden fast.

After mixing the two parts, begin pouring your mixture about 3/4 of the way into your glove mold. At that point, you may then take a Vibe Motor that we learned to encase with silicone tape previously, and work that into the mold. Make sure to push it about half way down into the mold, allowing for the wire leads to stick out of the form being created. You may use your popsicle sticks to guide the motor into the glove mold. You will then take the remaining portions of your Silicone 18, and fill the glove entirely. You may also use your clips to secure the motor's wires so that they stay on the exterior of the form you are creating.

    Step 10: Success!

Upon completing the steps listed above, you will have then successfully created your personal massager's form. All you have to do now is wait for the form to fully cure, and then remove the form from the glove mold. Enjoy!
