Introduction: Creature Headphone Cord Wrap

About: I am a professional computer geek who gets paid to do the things I love! When not earning a wage, I like to tinker with everything from electronics to woodworking.
Tired of untangling those headphone cords? Seen all the gadgets for taking care of the mess online. . .

Don't buy--Make it!

This is a quick and easy ear bud cord wrap to keep them nice and neat! This is my first instructable, I hope you find it useful!

Materials:
- imagination
- 1/8 plywood scrap
- jigsaw
- drill with 1/2" bit for eyes & 1/4" bit for mouth
- fine sand paper (#220 grit) or files
- paint
- ear buds/headphones

Step 1: Create Your Creature

I was inspired for this cord wrap while listening to Asylum Street Spankers and the aliens sing. So I created an alien creature. The first important consideration is not make the eyes too large as the ear buds will fall out. The other consideration is to include multiple limbs/slots to have something to wrap the cord around. First. draw out your creature on the paper to get the design you like. Then either trace it out or draw it directly to the 1/8 inch plywood.

Step 2: Release the Creature

Now, I am no good with sharp items, coping saws, or such. Therefore I used a jigsaw to cut the outline of my creature. Please use good sense and wear eye and respiratory protection. Use caution as most power tools love to eat fingers!

Step 3: Drill a Hole for the Eyes and Mouth

Again using caution, I used a drill to make the alien's mouth. I also used the drill for pilot holes in the alien's eyes. I finished cutting the eyes on the jigsaw.

Step 4: Create the Eyes

To cut the eyes, I loosed the tension on the jigsaw, which in turn loosens the blade. I then ran the blade through the eye, connected it back, and tightened the tension. I then carefully cut out the shape of the alien eyes. One very important consideration is to cut a line from eye to eye to allow both headphone cables to go through!

Step 5: Add Finishing Touches

Using the sandpaper, smooth around all the edges and surface of the creature. Add some paint if you like.

Step 6: Wrap Up Your Headphone Cords

By dropping the jack end of the headphones into the eyes of the creature, you pull out all the slack so that the ear buds rest gently in the creature's eyes.

Step 7: Tie Up Loose Ends

Then begin wrapping the cord around the stomach or arms of the creature. Finally, put the jack end into the creature's mouth!

This Alien even manages micro USB cables!

Step 8: Download Plan

I have attached 8.5" by 11" PDF of the creature so that you can print one out to trace to the medium of your choice (1/8" plywood, cardboard, etc.)
