Intro: Creepy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Comedian Gary Gulman did a sketch years ago about cookies. (It's hilarious, you should look it up.) At the end of it Gulman expresses how much he dislikes sugar cookies because they are always trying to be something else and without changing they are just boring sugar cookies. If there is to be a close second to the sugar cookie it would definitely be the chocolate chip cookie. It has been reinvented in a million different ways in a million different recipes...BUT they are never (okay, maybe rarely is a better word) decorated. I'm changing it up and decorating chocolate chip cookies for Halloween!

STEP 1: Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

This recipe happens to be gluten-free, but don't worry, all the flavor is there and they are still delicious. Super soft and chewy too!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup almond butter
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 chia egg (1 tablespoon ground chia + 3 tablespoons water)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/3 cup GF oats
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips, roughly chopped

Preheat oven to 350° F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl combine ground chia and water. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer cream butter and almond butter. Add chia egg and sugar. I only use 1/4 cup sugar but you could add more if you like your cookies sweeter.

Add remaining dry ingredients and mix to combine.

STEP 2: Spoon & Bake Creepy Cookie Base

Using a 1 1/4 inch cookie scoop, scoop batter onto parchment lined baking sheet and flatten slightly. These cookies will not spread so make them as large or as small as you want the final cookie to be.

Bake 8-10 minutes. Cookies will be soft.

STEP 3: Decorate Cookies to Make Them Creepy!

I used the following items/ingredients to decorate the cookies:

  • sugar pearls (large and small)
  • slivered almonds
  • food coloring markers (red and black)
  • ball head sculpting tool
  • red gel food coloring and small food safe paint brush *optional

Make an indent where you want the eyes and mouth to be. I worked with my cookies warm so the dents didn't turn in to cracks.

Using the black marker color in the holes.

Press sugar pearls in the indents for the eyes.

Break almond slivers into teeth like shapes and press into the mouth as desired.

Using the red marker color the teeth to look like blood. On some of the cookies I wanted a more bloody look and chose to use gel food coloring and a paint brush to get a more dramatic look!

Serve to your family and friends for a Halloween fright!

Hello I really want to try these but I'm having trouble with finding " ground chia" only find ground chia SEEDS or just chia seeds. Can I use chia seeds
Can I use regular flour, Oats, sugar, etc rather than the gluten free options? I would rather be able to use what I have in the kitchen now instead of having to buy all new ingredients, ya know?

These are sooo awesome! My kids love my chocolate chip cookies this will definitely take them to another level. Thanks for the write up.

...and, if you get them wet after midnight, do they grow green hair?

Those are actually really creepy. Good job!

I doubled the recipe to make 36 1 1/2 - 2 inch cookies (2 sheets; hate to waste the electricity).

Instead of 1 cup almond flour and 1/4 cup coconut flour, I used 1 cup wheat flour (1/2 whole wheat, 1/2 unbleached). Sorry; not gluten free. Dough plenty stiff enough and still soft when warm for face constructing. Bits of ground tomato or mashed peas make for extra gross decorating.

What did you use for eyes and teeth?

I'll be using a different recipe as my family has nut allergies, but these look like a fantastic idea for an easy treat to bring to a Halloween party. Thanks!

Use the tips of candy corn for teeth, and the "corn" tops for eyes. Or cut jelly beans in 1/2; I used Jelly Belly ice cream parlor colors; have random brown markings on them and weird pastel colors that look particularly ghoulish.

I used sugar pearls for the eyes and broken almond slivers for teeth. You will have to find a substitute for the almond slivers. Maybe thin slices of white chocolate would work? Post a picture if you make them!

Love them, will be making these for Halloween as well. You've got my vote!

Hi, your cookies look so funny! I really like it! I will use your recipe in this Halloween. But could I change butter for almond butter and brown sugar for coconut sugar? Thanks,

I imagine a sugar substitute would work fine. I've experimented with different ratios of butter and almond butter but have never just used one so I'm not sure how they would bake up. If you try it please let us know how they turn out!

Thanks, I will try it in next weekend and feedback to you!

I voted! Hope you win..... What are the eyes and teeth made of?

Without a doubt, the coolest chocolate chip cookies I have ever seen.

Thanks! Post a picture if you make some!
those are creepy! 10/10 would eat.... voted.

Very enticing idea, especially for elementary school teachers, parents, and grandparents to make. However, it would have been nice to also have old school ingredients like real eggs, all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, etc. Not everyone has access to the esoteric ingredients used in this recipe.
