Introduction: Crochet Flower Dish Cloth

This started out with me trying to stay busy and use up some yarn at the same time. I was using some hemp yarn--just to see if it made a good dish cloth. I usually use cotton for dish cloths but figured hemp would work too since it is a natural fiber.

The hemp yarn works well. I have been using my dish cloth for several weeks now. It holds up well to the abuse. I have tried acrylic yarns for this kind of thing--with far less satisfactory results.

Step 1: Beginning

Foundation round: I started out with a 'magic loop' but you can start out any way you are comfortable with. I used a ring with 12 single crochet. Each round adds one stitch to each of the 6 sides.

Round 1: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in next stitch, repeat 5 more times.

Round 2: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 3: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 4: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 4 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 5: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 5 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 6: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 5 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 7: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 8: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 7 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 9: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 8 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 10: 2 single crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 9 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Step 2: The Floppy Petal Part

I had a tiny bit of the first color left so I just used it. (This is a dish cloth--no one is going to check to see where exactly I switched colors.) This is the point where I planned to switch colors. You can choose to change yarns any time you want or make it all one color.

Round 11: 3 double crochet in the first stitch, 1 single crochet in each of the next 9 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 12: 3 double crochet between the first two double crochet of the previous round, 3 double crochet in next space, single crochet in next 9 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 13: 3 double crochet between the first two double crochet of previous round, 2 double crochet in each of the next 3 spaces, 3 double crochet between the last 2 double crochet, skip the first single crochet, single crochet in the next 8 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Round 14: 3 double crochet between the first double crochet of the previous round, 2 double crochet between each of the next spaces, 3 double crochet between the last 2 double crochet of the previous round, skip the first single crochet, single crochet in the next 7 stitches, repeat 5 more times.

Repeat rounds until the piece is the size you want. In each round, you will greatly increase the number of double crochet while decreasing the number of single crochet by one each time. This causes the ripples to form.

Step 3: Hanger Loop

Somewhere on the last round, I add a hanging loop.

Simply chain 10 or 12 stitches and slip stitch in the top of the previous double crochet. Then continue double crochet around.

Fasten off when you reach the end of the last round. Weave in any loose ends.
