Introduction: Cupcake Coffee Cup Cup Cakes - Lithium Rain Half Baked Goods of Righteousness

Make coffee mug shaped cupcakes from your instant custom mold.  Not seen on TV but you can make them now if you act fast.

Wherein expressly presented for ibler Lithium Rain for her penchant of java-like code and frothy operating systems. Does your cup runneth over or blue-screen?

This is a hearty cupcake with substance, served and tempered with a good cup of  hot not too bitter tea or coffee, or a glass of wholesome milk.

Step 1: What's Brewing

To make the mold, you will need:

Tinfoil or aliuminuminm foil for our friends in the UK

Parchment paper - this is a special food-grade paper (it says on the box will resist up to 420 degrees F, what happens at 451 degrees F?)  You can also just take a few paper cupcake liners if you don't have a full sheet.

Coffee mug

An item to use as the inside core for the mold, a small can, timbale, tin, shot glass,...I used the measuring cup from my rice cooker.  Just see that it fits inside the coffee mug so that it will form a suitably thick wall for the cupcake.

Cupcake mix:
I used my usual box-mix from the grocery store. I did not make my cake batter from scratch because I am not a master baker. Besides, all of those chemical stabilizers and performance enhancing additives make for an easy bake rich-tasting moist cake. This one was regular yellow cake, there are so many different flavors to choose from.

Someplace to bake the cupcake - I don't know how well this would work in an outdoor oven or solar cooker since they have uneven heat.

CAUTION:The kitchen is a dangerous place.  Know how to use all tools and techniques responsibly.  Things that go in a hot oven come out hot.  Respect the crucible.

Step 2: Carbonite Your Cup

Take the inner core piece and stand it on a flat surface.

Layer a sheet of tinfoil over that form.

Press down and form tightly against the object.  There should be a good bit left around the perimeter to wrap around the outer mug.
You can piece together and layer more sheets of tinfoil to achieve the desired shape.

I had to layer about 4 sheets of thin tinfoil to get a nice solid or rigid covering.

Stuff something fill in the void of the handle.  You just need something to press against when shaping the tinfoil.

Place the mug upside down to cover the new tinfoil inner core mold.  Center it inside.

Rip off a piece of parchment paper that is about the height of the mug.

Wrap the parchment paper around the handle.  Fold and shape the rest of the paper to go around the mug.

Fold up and wrap the tinfoil around the mug.  You can add additional tinfoil to bring it  up to the height of the mug.

Form a thick final edge or rim of the form.

Turn the mug upside down and rub around the bottom to see where the inner form is.

Poke a hole in the middle to extract the inner form.

Gently fold back the rest of the tinfoil to shape the "bundt cake" like form.

Flip it over and extract the coffee mug.

Round out the inner form bump to make cake extraction easier.  Even out the thickness of the walls.

Even out any excess or loose parchment paper at the rim of the mug form.

Step 3: Read the Fn Manual

Do exactly what it says on the Fn box.

Add eggz, melted buttah, watah, and stir vigorously with a whisk, wait, whisk is too big, use a fork mix by machine for a few minutes.

Pour into forms.  Only fill to a little more than a half since it will expand when it bakes.

I wasn't sure what the yield of a box of mix was so I had the emergency baking pan with some cupcake liners to bake off any excess mix.

Put it all on a cookie sheet to throw in an oven at 375 degrees F for about 20-30 minutes.

When it was about well browned, I probed with a bamboo skewer to see if it came out clean then it was done.

Step 4: The Reveal...

Now it's time to extricate the coffee mug cupcakes.

The cupcakes should have been cooled a bit so you can handle them.

Start peeling layer by layer the tinfoil that surrounds the cupcake.

You will then need to flip it over to start peeling off the part that formed the inside of the cupcake.

I found that if you start bunching up the tinfoil you can get it rigid enough to peel or pop out the center core.

Be careful not to rip apart the walls of the cupcake though.

You can then peel off the outside parchment paper.

Use a sharp knife to cut out the hole in the handle.

Step 5: Let Them Eat Cake...cup Cakes

You can now serve by filling up the inside of the cup with frosting.

I only had a can of whip cream lying around in the fridge so I made a latte/cappuccino.

I guess you can also fill this up with fruit or ice cream but no real liquid liquids unless you somehow waterproof the insides.

Hmmm. how about putting in crumb topping first, then the batter, you would have coffee cup cup cofee cake cupcake?

Enjoy!
