Summertime is the perfect season to sport a bleached tee. But this isn't your average '80s getup. This custom bleached tee shirt is a fresh spin on the old wash.

Step 1: What You'll Need

  • Solid colored tee shirt -- Hobby Lobby
  • Cardboard tee shirt insert -- Hobby Lobby
  • Roll of painter’s tape
  • Bleach
  • Preval Sprayer -- Amazon.com
  • Rubber gloves
  • Clothing to get messy

Step 2: Create Your Design

Pull your shirt over the cardboard insert, and stick strips of tape horizontally across. Or, if you want a unique design, get creative with the tape placement. Try vertical stripes, diagonals, short or long pieces of tape.

The taped surfaces will maintain the shirt's original color, while the exposed fabric will lighten.

Step 3: Prep the Preval Sprayer: Bleach Mixture

Prepare the Preval Sprayer. We used non-diluted bleach, so we added 1.5 ounces of bleach and 2 ounces of water to the jar.

Cap and shake the jar. Then, attach the spray can and apply a couple of even coats to the shirt.

Note: This project is best done outside. Also, if you have sensitive skin, it's recommended you wear rubber gloves.

Step 4: Expose Your Work

After spraying your shirt, let it sit in the sun for 1 to 2 hours. The longer it's exposed, the brighter the bleached areas will be.

Step 5: Laundering Instructions

Toss your shirt in the wash without detergent for up to two cycles, and you're ready to sport your custom designed bleached tee.

Protect your clothing! It's recommended you wash the shirt by itself for the first couple of washes.
