Making Shelves doesn't have to be hard at all. So in this simple Instructable I'll be walking you through every step to make some shelves that can be easily customised to suit any size you have!

Supplies

Materials

Wood - Standard DVDS are 140mm wide so the wood needs to be atleast that. But i would like my tv to sit on top so all my wood was ripped to 200mm wide.

Pocket Hole Screws

Pocket Hole Plugs

Wood Glue

Tools

Drill

Drill Driver

Mitre Saw (Hand saw will do if you have the patience)

Measuring Tape

Square

Pencil

Pocket Hole Jig

Corner Clamps

Clamps

Sander

Step 1: Cut the Wood to Size

I used some laminated panels that were 1800mm x 600mm x 18mm. I ripped these down to 200mm wide. I then used the mitre saw to cut them to the following sizes

2x 1500mm

2x 680mm

2x 1464mm

These dimensions will allow me to make a unit that has 4 shelves and a total size of 1500mm L x 716mm H x 200mm D

However these can be completely customised to any size you desire

Step 2: Drill Pocket Holes

I purchased the cheapest pocket hole jig I could find at the shops and then set it up. The drill has a depth stop and needs to be set up correctly which will depend on the thickness of your timber. 18mm is the thickness of the wood I'm using, so ill set the stop at about 89mm from the step of the bit

I clamped down the pocket hole jig and drilled 3 evenly spaces holes on each side of the wood. Its important to put these holes on the underside of the wood or at least the side that is the least visible.

Step 3: Attaching the Sides Together

Grab the corner clamps and take the time to align both the top and the bottom of the joint up until they are perfect and tighten them together,

Next loosen one side and slide the board back a little and add some glue.

Push the board back together and tighten the clamps

Screw the boards together with pocket hole screws

Remove the clamps and check the boards are square

Then its the same for the other sides to make the outside frame of the shelf

Step 4: Attach the Middle Shelves

Remeasure the inside dimensions of the shelf and cut the boards down to that size, mine were 1464mm.

Drill the pocket holes on the boards just like before

Then screw the shelves in at your desired height. I recommend cutting spacer blocks to help keep it at the height while attaching I chose 250mm from the bottom, and then 200mm on the next two shelves.

Step 5: Preparing for Finish

We are on the final stages now so i brought these little plugs to fill in the pocket holes and they need to be glued into place then cut down and filled with wood filler.

When that is done you can give the area a good sand, followed by sanding down the whole shelf unit up to 240 grit.

Step 6: Finishing

There is a million different ways to finish wood, from painting, staining, varnishing or even just waxing but i went with some linseed oil just to bring out the colour a bit then sealed it in with a cabinet makers wax. This just got applied with a paper towel and after a few coats it was all ready to be set up

Step 7: All Done

The shelves are all done and ready to be loaded up with whatever you are storing.
