We are going to be making a Customized Go Bag, made specifially for holding the Nintendo Switch and all of it's accessories. The bag features multiple pockets, designated spaces for Joycons and a Pro Controller, a quick access pocket lined with microfiber to store the Switch itself. My favorite feature of the bag is the quick access pocket. There is a zipper on the side of the backpack that leads to the microfiber lined pocket. The pocket is also accessablie from the inside of the bag. The pocket makes it easy to quickly store the Switch. With or without the Joycons.

Lets get started

Step 1: Gather Supplies

For this bag I used the Cumberland Backpack Pattern from Sew Sweetness, but you can use any backpack pattern you would like. To be respectful to the pattern designer, I will only be showing you modifications that I have made/things I have added.
In addition to the supplies mentioned in the backpack pattern you will need:

12' invisible zipper

Microfiber cloths (Purchased from Walmart)

Flexable cutting mats (from the dollar store)

Fabric Marking Pen

Velcro (I used sew in velcro, but iron-on would be easier)

Fabric glue, or Hem tape

an additional piece of exterior fabric 8x14

1/4in Elastic ( I used black )

You will want to start backpack construction per the pattern instructions. Stop when you have finished the main components, but before you have attached the front and back pieces of the main large pocket.

Step 2: Attaching Elastic for Joycon Holders

1.Take your Joycons and place them on the Front Lining Pocket piece. Make sure they are exactly where you want them.

2. Using your fabric pen make marks on both sides, top, and bottom of each Joycon.

3. Cut 4 Elastic pieces to 2 1/4 in. long.

4. Fold over elastic 1/4 inch and sew on top of the side mark. Repeat with other side of elastic.

5. After attaching the first piece of Elastic, make sure your Joy con will fit.

6. Repeat step 4, until all 4 elastic pieces are attached

7. Clean up all pen marks.

8. Set aside

Step 3: Attaching Elastic for Pro Controller Holder

1. Place the Pro Controller, centered, about 2 inches from the top of the bag.

2. Make 4 marks with the fabric pen. On the top and bottom of both sides.

3. Cut two pieces of elastic to 5 1/2 long.

4. Fold elastic over 1/4 in, and sew on top of marks. Be sure the elastic is vertical.

5. Repeat on other side

6. Check that your pro controller fits

7. Set aside

Step 4: Making Quick Access Pocket

1.Place switch where pocket will be

2. Cut 2 pieces of microfiber and 1 piece of fabric at 8x14

3. Take one piece of microfiber and the only piece of fabric. Place them right sides together and pin. (I like to use wonder clips)

4. Sew along the longest part with a 1/4in seam allowance.

5. Flip so right sides are out

6. Take your second piece of microfiber and lay it, wrong side down, on top of the fabric piece you just sewed. So place the wrong side of the microfiber to the right side of the fabric. Pin the bottom only, make sure you pin all three layers.

7. Sew along the bottom with a 1/4in seam allowance. Be sure to sew all three pieces together.

8. Flip the microfiber cloth on the top so that both microfiber pieces are now right sides together. You should now have a basic pocket. Leave the sides open for now, we will get to that later. You will now gently iron all seams.

9. Topstitch the fabric piece with only one of the microfiber pieces at 1/8in. Make sure the back microfiber piece is not in the way.

10. Cut a piece of velcro (hook & loop) 3 in long.

11. Attach velcro to the back microfiber piece and the front microfiber piece

Step 5: Stabilize Back Main Piece

Since this piece of the backpack houses the switch and the pro controller I wanted it to have a bit more stability.

1. Take the cutting mat and attach hem tape, or fabric glue to the back of one.

2. Center and attach the mat to the wrong side (back) of the pattern piece.

3. Cut off excess.

Step 6: Attaching Quick Access Pocket.

1. Take your marking pen and measure 1/4in up from the center. This will be where the bottom of the pocket will rest. I only made a small mark, but if it easier for you to mark a line that's fine.

2. Line up the bottom of the pocket to your new mark and pin.

3. Trim excess fabric

4. Sew the bottom of the pocket onto the back main pattern piece using a 1/8in seam allowance.

5. Pin only the back microfiber piece onto the main back pattern piece. Sew only the back microfiber piece using an 1/8in seam allowance.

6. Set aside

Step 7: Take a Snack Break

Not necessary, but highly encouraged! ( and highly enjoyed )

Step 8: Attaching Zipper for Quick Access Pocket

At this point you should have the backpack almost completely constructed. You should be ready to attach all pieces of the backpack together to make a whole backpack.

1. Cut two strips of fabric. They will be 1 1/2in by as long as your zipper is.

2. Attach pieces of fabric to the zipper. Place one right side of the fabric to the right side of the zipper tape. Sew with a 1/4 seam allowance, repeat on other side.

3. You will want to fold over the fabric 1/4 in and topstitch with an 1/8in seam allowance. Do this before you attach the zipper. I had to do it after and it was a lot more work.

4.You can start sewing the backpack together, just stop before you get to the zipper spot. You will want to sew one end of the pocket closed. Keep the side open you want for quick access. I chose the right side.

5. Place the zipper how you want it to be directionally. I opted to have the zipper open from the top to the bottom.

6. Place the right side of the zipper to the right side of the fabric. Sew together with 1/8in seam allowance.

7. Pin the other side of the zipper to the front of the backpack (see picture) You will want to make sure this is how you want your zipper oriented. If it seems fine sew on top of the topstitching.

8. Test out the zipper and check for holes.

9. If need you can unpick and start again. It is pretty tricky.

10. Finish backpack as per pattern instructions.
