Introduction: Cutting Board Out of Black Walnut and 2x4 Inlay

About: I am a Christian and Love my God! I am single, I live with my family. I was home schooled, I have my B.A. in Criminal Justice and I am working on getting my Masters. I do woodworking as a hobby, God has given …

I made this cutting board out of black walnut and 2x4's for my mom... I am in the process of making another one for a friend's wedding... will post pics and instructions when finished...

Step 1: Design

once you have the board you want to use... draw out your design

Step 2: Cutt Out Your Design

once you have your design on your wood, cut it into the wood without cutting all the way through

Step 3: Doing the Inlay

cut strips of 2x4 to fit in your cuts, sand if needed to insure the strips fit in.. once you have all the strip pieces fitting in the cuts... it is time to glue them in place. *(note make sure you knock the strips in as far as they well go or you will have a gap...) I used another board to keep presure on it while it dried..

Step 4: Trimming and Sanding and Routering

as you can see in the picture of the board drying.. the strips are sticking out from the board.. therefore they will need to be trimmed and the whole board sanded smooth. I used 60 grit sandpaper and then 150 grit sandpaper. I then took my router and rounded the edges and corners.. then sanded it down once more.

Step 5: Wax Coating

once the sanding is done I followed apmoritz2's instructable to seal his 2x4 end grain cutting board/butcher block... the few things I did that was not mentioned was so 20mins for each coat and scrap off the excess wax after the 20min.. then I took a rag and wiped it down after the final coat.

Step 6: Finished

that's it we are done.. the only thing that you might need to do is re-coat it with the wax/mineral oil mix after some use..
Hope you enjoy making it!
