Intro: DIY Cellphone Tripod Mount

The goal of this ible is to show you how to make a simple tripod mount for your cellphone. I needed this when I first started making youtube videos for my ibles and all I had was my cell phone, so I made this holder to use on my tripod that I already had.

STEP 1: Materials

You will need

  1. 1/4-20 T-nut
  2. 5 pieces of scrap wood about the length of your phone (I used 1x1 pieces)
  3. A drill
  4. a 5/16th drill bit and a 1/8th drill bit4 screws
  5. a screwdriver / bit for your screws (those are the best bang for your buck for longevity)
  6. cyanoacrylate glue. Get a large bottle to save a lot of money.
  7. A tripod! They go from small cheap and simple (with a cell-phone holder) to fancy, flexible and sturdy. Having worked in a camera store I happen to have a very decent tripod, I can tell you that there is a difference in the quality as far as how well the rotating head will hold it's position and glide easily in repositionnement. In fact, it accounts for most of the cost of the tripod.

STEP 2: Mark Your Pieces

Align your support pieces where they make sense to not obstruct your camera, flash (leave a bit of extra room to avoid shadows), and whatever space you need to unlock your phone if it goes to sleep while you are doing prep or on a break.

STEP 3: Drill

Drill the 3/8th hole for the t-nut, and pre-drill your screw holes, otherwise the wood will split.

STEP 4: Assemble

Make sure you put some crazy glue where the t-nut will go, otherwise it will get pulled out. Then screw in the arms.

STEP 5: Profit!
