Introduction: DIY Coin Leveler

About: Born as a farmer, studied electronics ,working as a Consultant and a 3D printing enthusiast by night..

Picture this, you are planing to move to your new apartment, and once you move you will come across a herculean task of arranging your picture frames on your newly painted wall with out making a mess! like the last time where you had to drill multiple holes in the wall to arrange your frames.

In addition say you have one of those old tables which you need level, which in my case is an old Ikea table that I place my 3D printer on. If you come across this situation,3D print the Simple Coin Leveler STL file attached in the next step, before you move to your new apartment.Use a coin and folder piece of paper to level the Table.

In case you want to arrange you photo,3D print the STL file attached in step 3 and use a Laser pet toy which helps level the photo frame with the frame that is already nailed on the wall as shown in the second picture above.

Note: you can use the DIY coin level for simple application, but more serious application like leveling bricks/a beam of wood, you'll need to get a more accurate beam level which uses a bubble in the fluid for leveling..

Step 1: 3D Print the Simple Coin Leveler

Download the 3D printing software that your printer supports, in my case I am using the Printrbot Simple Metal which use Repetier-Host as a software to

  • Slice the STL files attached, which basically means cutting the part into various layers
  • And send commands to the 3D printer while printing

In my case I am using the following filaments HATCHBOX 1.75mm Orange PLA

Download the STL file attached

  • slicing should take about a 14-16 seconds
  • and printing should take about 25- 30 mins base on your printer settings.

Step 2: Using the Simple Leveler

Using the simple Leveler is pretty straight forward, you'll need a coin in addition to the 3D printed part.

Ensure that the coin moves freely inside the 3D printed part , if you see warping inside the coin grove of 3D printed part adjust your printer setting which will slower down your print time.

Place the coin in the 3D printed part and use a folded piece of paper to put under one leg of the table and you should see the coin move to the center, you may need to fold the paper a couple of times depending on the angle of the tilt.

You can also use the coin lever with the Photo frame to check, if is nice an level as shown in the picture above.

Step 3: 3D Print the Laser Coin Leveler

Download the STL file attached

  • slicing should take about a 14-16 seconds
  • and printing should take about 40- 50 mins base on your printer settings.

In addition to the 3D printed part you'll need a laser, which you can get at your local pet store like PetSmart.

Ensure that the coin moves freely inside the part , if you see warping inside the coin grove of 3D printed part adjust your printer setting which will slower down your print time.

Step 4: Using Laser Coin Leveler

Once you have put up your first photo frame using the 3D printed part and a coin.

Attach the Laser to the Coin Leveler, and place it at a level so that the laser points to the top of the frame which is already nailed to the wall as shown in the picture above.

Now move the other frame in level to a point so that the laser is about to get cut off as shown in the second picture(Note: here I am using a white paper to show that the beam is almost about to be cut off, you don't need the white paper)
