Introduction: DIY Infinity Mirror

This is a simple and easy way to make an infinity mirror. You have to purchase most of the supplies, since they won't be found laying around the house, but once you get them it's a pretty quick build that looks super cool.

Supplies

1. A shadow box that is around one inch deep, give or take.

2. Sticky-backed LED lights.

3. Solar film (this is commonly used on windows for privacy, one side is mostly see through while the other side reflects light back like a mirror).

4. A mirror the same size as your box, to either place inside or to

4. a spray bottle with water.

5. A squeegee or a flat edged piece of plastic.

6. Some paper towels or a cloth.

Step 1: Applying the Solar Film

The solar film is what makes the mirror effect inside of your box that seems to go on forever. You want to add it to the inside of the glass part of your shadow box. Depending on your box, the glass will either come off of the front, or the back of the shadow box will come out like a picture frame (like mine in the picture). If the glass comes out, then you can just trace the size of your glass on to the solar film and cut it. If the back comes out, you will have to measure it with a ruler and then cut the solar film with those measurements.

Once you have the correct size of solar film you clean your glass and get ready to apply the film (make sure if the glass in in the box that you put the solar film inside the box, not outside, or the mirror effect won't work.). To apply it you first peel of the back of the solar film, then you spray both the newly revealed side of the solar film and your glass with a thin mist of water. After doing that, quickly lay the wet side of the film to the wet glass and make sure it's lined up, press it down and get some of the water out. Now get the squeegee and get all the bubbles and water out, cleaning everything up with your paper towels or cloth.

Step 2: Adding the Mirror

Once you have added the film to the glass you need to add the mirror. If your box opens in the front, you put the mirror back inside and attach it to the back. If it has a removable back you can just replace the back with the mirror.

After figuring out where your mirror will go you add the lights. I added them on the inside for the infinity effect and then also added them around the outside just because I had extra and it looked cool, but you really only need it on the inside.

If your box opens in the back it's easy, just take the mirror off the back and stick the lights on the inside around your frame, about in the middle, then run them out the back and stick them to the back of the mirror. If it opens in the front you might need to drill a hole the side so you can run your lights out of the box and it still look clean, but after that it's basically the same thing, just run them around the side and then out.

After this you add either add your glass to the front solar film facing in (for front opening box), or you add your mirror onto the back and turn on your lights. It should light up and appear as if you could reach your hand deep into the simple one inch box! I really like how mine turned out with this method, although maybe if I make another I'd try to do it on a bigger scale since my box was only 12x12 and I think it would look even more cool if it was larger.
