Introduction: DIY LED Studio Ring Light

Hello Everyone,

Today I am going to show you how to make DIY LED Studio Ring Light with color temperature controller for your YouTube or Music Videos,

If you are a beginner in your YouTube channel to make your videos look great all you need is proper lighting setup, as a beginner it may not worth spending huge amount in professional studio lights so i decided to make my studio ring light with 168 LED's which works like a professional studio lights, I am also going to use this Light for my upcoming Videos.

Supplies

Materials Used:

  • 2 mm Round MDF Board 12-inch Diameter
  • Clear Frosted/Matt Acrylic Sheet 2mm
  • 1/4" to 3/8" Reducer Bushing Tripod Convert Screw Adapter
  • 1/4" Male to 1/4" Male Tripod Screw Adapter
  • PCB Standoffs & M3 screw
  • SMD 5050 Warm White and Cool/ Normal White LED Strip
  • XL4015 DC-DC 5A constant current Lithium Charger
  • 12V PWM DC Motor Speed Controller / LED Dimmer
  • ON/OFF Switch
  • Spray Paint Matt Black and Matt White
  • 3mm Sun board
  • Aluminum Foil Tape

Step 1: YouTube Video

Step 2: Making the Ring

I Marked 9.5 mm Radius using compass in 30 Cm/12 inch MDF board

I made few holes to easily cut the center part

Similarly i cut the Acrylic sheet in to the same size as the MDF board

Step 3: Making the Required Holes

I marked the four courner for drilling holes for holding screws and another few markings for heat vent to keep the LED's cool

Step 4: Making Wooden BOX

I took few pieces of wood and cut in to the required sizes for making box and inserted Tripod 1/4" to 1/8" Reducer in to the Top and Bottom of wooden BOX

Step 5: I Screwed the BOX in to the MDF Board

I glued the wood pieces together and screwed it in to the MDF board.

Step 6: Sun Board

I glued the Sun board over the corners as a sides cover

Step 7: Aluminum Foil Tape

I used the Aluminum foil tape for light reflection as well as the heat conduction.

Step 8: LED Strip

I Used the 5 Meter 5050 SMD Cool/Normal White and Warm White SMD LED Strip,

I glued it in a order like one cool white and one Warm White LED strips, so I can get the equal light illumination.

Step 9: Insulating

Since the Aluminum foil tapes are electrically conductive so it necessary to used the Masking tape below the both edges of LED to insulate it form the Aluminum Foil tape to avoid the short circuits.

Step 10: Soldering

I have soldered the warm white and cool white LED's Separately to control the brightness individually.

Step 11: Testing

To make sure all LED's working condition, I tested the LEDs before assemble the power controller modules,

So i used my DIY Bench power supply for Testing, I set the Voltage to 12V and Current to 3A and connected to LED and it doesn't work and consumes the maximum current of 3A.

After checking the connections i found the short circuit between the led strips, which caused due to poor quality glue the LED stripes moved caused the short circuit.

After fixing the LED glows perfectly and the Maximum power consumption is 2.25 Amps.

So i need 12V and 2.5 Amps power supply for this Ring Light.

Step 12: Using GLUE GUN to Prevent Short Circuit

Since the LED strips glues not strong enough to hold it in a place so i used the Glue Gun to prevent the short circuit.

Step 13: Setting the DC to DC CC CV Converter Module

The LED's actually need the constant current and constant voltage to work with out any issues.

So i used the XL4015 DC-DC 5A constant current Lithium Charger module to power the LED's,

To setup the module you need power supply grater than 12v and 3A, I used my DIY Bench power supply and set the voltage to 15V and 4A, than i connected it to the input of the Converter module.

Also i connected the Multimeter to the output of the converter module to measure the output voltage.

Now using the trim pot in the module i adjusted the voltage to 12V than i set the Multimeter to current and now i adjusted the current to 2.5 Amps.

Form now even if you increase the input voltage the out of converter module will be only 12V and the Maximum current will be 2.5 Amps only.

Using this module will allow you to use the wide range of power supply options.

So you can connect any 12V to 24V Adapter with the Maximum current of 5Amps as a input.

Step 14: Connecting PWM LED Dimmer

I connected the PWM LED Dimmer to the DC to DC converter module and the LED's and placed it inside the wooden Box.

I have also added the circuit diagram below please also refer if required.

Step 15: Circuit Diagram

Step 16: Making Back Cover

I took a piece of Acrylic Sheet and marked the required dimensions to drilling a holes for Switch, DC Female Jack and PWM controller Knobs.

Step 17: Switch and DC Female Jack

I fixed the Switch and DC female jack to the acrylic sheet and soldered the connections as per the circuit diagram and i used the Heat shrink tube to insulate the connections.

Step 18: Back Cover

I screwed the back cover in to the wooden Box and inserted the control knobs in to the PWN converter.

Step 19: Spray Painting

I used the Matt Black spray paint to paint the back side and Matt White to paint the sides than it look better after painting.

Step 20: PCB Stand OFF

I took the PCB stand off and M3 Screws than i inserted the M3 at the back side of the MDF board where i already made holes at 4 corners, than i inserted the Stand off over the front side of the board.

I am going to use this stand off to hold the Acrylic sheet at the front side.

Step 21: LED Diffuser and Front Cover

Since i was not able to found the diffuser sheet at better price online so decided to use the Matt Acrylic sheet with trace paper as diffuser, After i peeled off the protective sheet at one side that comes with acrylic sheet than i got an idea to use protective sheet as diffuser so i didn't peel off the protective sheet at another side.

If your acrylic sheet doesn't have the protective film like mine you can use the Trace Paper as a diffuser as a cheapest option.

Than i screwed the acrylic sheet by matching the 4 corners of PCB stand off.

Step 22: Tripod Ball Head

I used the tripod Ball head as holder to use with studio light stand, So now i can able to adjust the position of my ring light easily.

Step 23: Smart Phone Holder

If your going to use your smart phone to take videos than this step will be more useful for you.

I used the 1/4 to 1/4 Male to Male Tripod Screw Adapter and i mounted it over the top of the wooden block there we already made a female thread adapter to hold it than i mounted my Tripod Smart Phone Holder to hold my mobile.

Now you can make a beautiful videos form your mobile with good lighting in a budget.

Step 24: Final Setup

I mounted my DIY LED Ring in to my studio light stand

Since i don't have any power supply adapter i used my Wi-Fi router adapter which is only 12V 1Aamp and even with this adapter the LED glows brightly.

But it always recommended to use power supply between 12V to 24V and 2.5A to 5A Max to get the full brightness .
