Introduction: DIY: Make Your Own Deodorant
Ingredients:
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1/4 cup Arrowroot Powder (can I just say this was really hard to find! I eventually found it at Hyvee)
4 tablespoons Coconut Oil
10 drops of essential oil (I chose Sweet Orange)
A jar with a lid
First in a small bowl, mix up all the dry ingredients. Then start to add the oils a little at a time. Mix with a fork until you get the consistency that you like. I actually had trouble with this, so I nuked it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. It made it liquidy (which was easy to stir & then pour into my jar), but then it solidified back up.
Now, to apply it, you take a small amount in your fingers and kinda warm it up but rubbing your fingers together. then rub it in each armpit. You only need to apply it once! The other nice thing, no more deodorant marks on your shirts! Also, this is super cheap to make as well since the ingredients last a long time.
I've been using this deodorant since 10/21/11... and I love it! I've found that it works better than normal store bought deodorant. The first few days of using it I had a little extra sweat, but it only took 2 days for my body to adjust to not having Aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly or any aluminum compounds.

I use cornstarch to replace the arrowroot powder and it works.

Is the coconut oil harder like crisco or oily like veg oil

It's harder until it warms up then turns into regular oil consistency

OMG - this is PERFECT. I used the melted coconut oil - and coconut essential oils. At first, my pits broke out, then I realized it was the toxins coming out. I stopped for one day, then started up again. No problems at all. I exercised outside in the sun for 2 hours, sweating all over - and NO smell from the pits. I LOVE this recipe - thanks!!

can other oils be substituted for the coconut oil or is it only coconut oil that you can use?

No idea!

I have one question about the cocoanut oil. Is it refined or raw that you have used?
Reply 11 years ago on Introduction
I used refined. Doing a little google searching on the difference between the two, refined tends to be more hygienic than the unrefined or raw coconut oil. The raw coconut oil is of course more natural, however since it does not undergo any refining and may contain dust particles and other unwanted stuff.
But then later research that I found says cosmetic industries tend to use unrefined. So my conclusion? You can probably use either and be fine.

Hi! Umm.. does this darken your skin?
Reply 11 years ago on Introduction
No. It really melts into your skin. The only thing I've noticed is that if I have a day where I don't shower and then put this deodorant on without washing the old stuff off, it feels a little caked on like my pits can't breath. So as long as you are cleaning your pits everyday you shouldn't have any problems.

i got this recipe from my daughter....i love...it works!....it is inexpensive...
all the ingredients were in my pantry...i put mine in a very small restaurant ware bowl w/a ceramic "lid"....looks good on the counter in the bath
i consider this both an antiperspirant, (corn starch or arrowroot or clay) & a deodorant, (baking soda)...the coconut oil is a carrier for the others
i lift heavy cases everyday & i am menopausal...which means hot flashes
whenever they feel like it......which means sweating......which is normal
& does not mean that i ....or others.....are not clean
i dont mind using my hands for applying the cream...the coconut oil melts
into my hands & just makes them soft...it is not oily @ all
i may try adding a few drops of essential oil...ambergris is my favorite
tu for the ible !
p.s.......love the smell of garlic & onions by themselves or on people.....two of the best smells in the world!

I thought about doing that as well, except I didn't have any.

Cornstarch can be used to replace arrowroot, should one not be able to find it.

Some Healthfood Stores carry Arrowroot in bulk.

Is this not an antiperspirant?
