Introduction: DIY Wood Table Rejuvenation
During this DIY project I sanded down an old wooden table of mine. After sanding it down, I added some designs, painted it, and added a clear coat. My main focus was to rejuvenate the table and make it like new again.
Supplies
You will need the following:
- 2 medium paintbrushes
- 1 pair of protective goggles
- 1 mini paintbrush (words/designs if desired)
- 1 small can of paint (color of your choice if you desire to add designs)
- 1 can of polyacrylic clear coat gloss (depending on the size of your table there may be a larger can needed)
- 1 can of golden oak paint (size depends on table size)
- 2 jumbo sanding sponges
- 2 thick tablecloths
- 2 pairs of thick gloves
- 2 small paintbrushes
- Wear old or worn-down clothing with sleeves that you do not mind getting dirty.
Safety Precautions
- Make sure no fans are on during this project.
- Make sure there are no animals in the work space.
- Make sure you apply all protective gear before starting the project.
- Take your time as this project requires focus, precision, patience, and attention to detail.
- Make sure to have a window near or door available to open if the paint, clear coat, or wood dust smells become too harsh.
Attachments
Step 1: Laying Protective Cover
Lay down your thick tablecloth.
Step 2: Applying Protective Gear
Apply your gloves and protective goggles.
Step 3: Laying Your Table in Place
Place your wooden table on the tablecloth.
Step 4: Sanding Begins
Grab your jumbo sanding sponges and sand down your table on every side.
Step 5: Next Sanding Step
Sand the legs.
Step 6: Final Sanding Step
Sand the hard to sand/reach areas until they are all leveled and smooth all around.
Step 7: Sanding Check
Ensure your table is smooth on all surfaces, legs, and hard to reach areas.
Step 8: Final Sanding Check
Repeat the sanding process if needed. Ensure all areas, legs, and surfaces are smooth before moving on.
Step 9: Painting Begins
Grab one of your medium paintbrushes so you can begin to paint all surfaces and areas with enough paint to blend it all well.
Step 10: Allow Paint to Dry
Allow your paint to dry for about 30 minutes or until you can tell the paint has completely dried.
Step 11: Adding Designs
Grab your mini paintbrushes and apply your designs if desired. (Using marker to add designs is an option too)
Step 12: Allow the Designs to Dry
Allow the paint to dry for 30 minutes or until you can tell it is completely dry. If you decide to use marker then you may skip this step.
(I applied my designs in marker twice which is why you can see them under my paint, you don't have to do this though)
Step 13: Setting Up Clearcoat
Grab your second medium paint brush and open your can of clearcoat.
Step 14: Applying Clearcoat
Apply your clearcoat on every surface, leg, and area using your medium paintbrush
Step 15: Semi-Dry of Clearcoat
Allow your first coating of clear coat to semi dry.
Step 16: More Clearcoat
Apply thin layers of clear coat at a time ensuring it is not caked in certain areas as thin layers will help it dry quicker and allow it to be leveled well.
Step 17: Final Dry
Allow your clear coat to completely dry.
Step 18: Check Clear Coating
Check to make sure every leg, surface, and area has a leveled clear coat.
Step 19: Final Clear Coat
Repeat the clear coat process in whatever area is needed if it is not drying well or it is not leveled well.
