Introduction: DIY Gas Mask Prop
This instructable is on how to make a prop gas mask for halloween or as a costume
Step 1: Materials
First you need materials.
- a sheet of thick fabric
- small transparent lenses
- small diameter pvc pipe
- Card board
- old electrical tape reel
- Eyelet
- wire ( 10cm)
Aaand some tools-
- hammer
- scissors
- hot glue gun
- drill
Step 2: Eye Lenses
First take your fabric and cut it to a size that completely covers your face. Next, get your lenses and mark where they go corresponding to your eyes. Make sure they line up! Cut holes in the fabric for the lenses and glue them on with hot glue. Make sure to glue them on the INSIDE.
Step 3: Respirator Part 1
Now take your pvc pipe, and glue it to the bottom of the mask, just below your mouth. Cut it to a length of roughly 10 cm, or whatever suits you.
Step 4: Respirator Part 2
For this step you need cardboard, an old roll of electrical tape, and hot glue.
Using the roll of tape, trace its outline on to some cardboard with a pen. Make 2 outlines as both sides of the roll must be covered.
Cut out the outlines with scissors, and glue to the roll. Make sure it is a strong join. On one side of the roll, cut a large hole, but not wider than the diameter than that of the pvc pipe. On the other side, drill lots of holes for ventilation. Make sure it allows you to breath easily!
This done, you can glue the respirator to the pvc.
Step 5: Making the Head Band for the Mask Part 1
For this step you will need more of that fabric you used earlier. If theres none left, no problemo. Just use something like it.
Take your chosen fabric, and cut it into strips 30cm long and 5cm wide. This is the tricky bit. You need to take your face mask, put it on, then measure your fabric strips to the diameter of your head. Make 2 side straps and 1 to go over the top of your head.
Step 6: Headband Part 1
This requires the eyelet, hammer, wire and as always hot glue.
Glue your three straps to the mask, and then, take the top and one side strap and glue the ends together. At the join of the 2 straps, glue a wire hook there.
On the other loose single strap, cut a hole and insert the eyelet. Squash it with the hammer to make a good join.
This done, the sets of straps should join together in a firm fit around your head. -IF YOU MEASURED CORRECTLY!-
Step 7: Finishing Up
If you want, spray paint the respirator the colour of your fabric and let it properly dry.
Well, this done, you have completed your gas mask.
Now go scare someone. This mask combined with a full length hazmat suit looks really cool.
