Halloween BOOO...x/ Nightlight

Supplies You'll Need:

White paper

Thick black Sharpie

Step 1: Step 1: Draw a Sketch

To start, on a piece of scratch paper draw a sketch of what you want your scene in the box to look like. Later on, we will divide the drawing into 5 different component drawings and laser cut each one out. Once they are cut we will be able to stack them on top of one another to create a 3D image.

Step 2: Step 2: Divide Up Your Original Drawing

Take 6 different pieces of white scratch paper, the thick sharpie pen and a ruler. On the 1st piece, draw a square. Make its border have a width of 8 mm. It's height and width will be 100x100 mm. On the second piece of paper draw the ferns with the square border that has the same dimensions as mentioned previously. On the 3rd piece of paper draw the spider, and so on...

Step 3: Step 3: Take Pictures With Adobe Capture

If you don't already have Adobe Capture on your phone you can download it free from the app store. What this app does is it takes pictures of drawings and conveniently converts the images into vectors. This way we can laser cut out our drawings easily. On Adobe Capture take a picture of each of the 6 component drawings we made.

Step 4: Step 4: Laser Cut

The 1st layer we will laser cut is the ferns.*

1. Email the picture of the ferns drawing, (which you have saved as an image in Adobe Capture) to yourself

2. Plug in your flash drive to your computer. Open up your email.

3. From your email, download the picture of the fern you just sent to yourself and drag it into your flash drive.

4. Eject the flash drive. plug it into the laser cutter.

5. Import the picture of the ferns onto the laser printer.

6. Trace the image by clicking bmp, on the laser cutter. Once you do that click get outline and then apply to image

7. Drag the original image off of the outline. Delete the picture of the ferns so that only the outline of it is remaining.

8. As you will be able to see the image was double outline, you have to delete the outer outline.

9. Select the whole image. Click on the outer-outline lines that you would like to be deleted by selecting the line and clicking the big "x" on the left side of the screen

10. Once the picture is ready to be downloaded and laser cut, you first need to select the whole image and scale it to a size of 100x100 mm.

11. Laser cut it! :)

12. Repeat steps 1-11 for the spider, hands, and 2 other vine drawings

13. Repeat steps 1-11 for laser cutting out the drawing of the 100x100 cm square.

14. Repeat step 13, 13 times so that there is 13 regular square layers\

15. Laser cut out 1 a square piece of wood that is 100x100 cm. This will be used as the 1st layer of the box.

*In this procedure I used a boss laser cutter which can automatically trace images. If you don't have access to one of these you can manually trace the images in Adobe Illustrator and then upload them to a laser cutter

Step 5: Step 5: Stacking the Layers

Lay the 100x100 mm piece wood down as the 1st layer.

The 2nd= A 100x100 border square.

3rd= A 100x100 border square.

4th= Border square.

5th= The tall vines.

6th= Border square.

7th= Border square

8th= Short vines

9th= Border square

10th= Border square

11th= Border square

12th= Spider

13th = Border square

14th = Border square

15th= Hands

16th=Border square

17th=Border square

18th=Ferns

19th= Border square

20th=Border square

Step 6: Step 6: 3D Print a Hollow Skull

To do this you can either design your own hollow skull to 3D print or you can look one up here on Thingiverse.com . You can export your hollow skull onto your 3D printer, but 1st make sure the skull has a width of 22 mm.

Step 7: Step 7: Putting in Lights (optional)

For this, I used small 1.5-meter orange string lights. Before you glue all of the layers down you have to weave the lights around through the box. Drill a hole through the lower right corner of the box so you have a hole to put the lights into the box through. Take the hot glue and glue so the light cord fits in the hole.

Step 8: Step 8: Gluing, Sanding, and Finishing!

When all of the lights are in the box, one by one glue each of the wood layers down onto each other with super glue. Once everything is dry, sand the edges of the box to make everything smooth and even. Now it's Complete!
