Introduction: Delicious Saltine Toffee

Every year when the Holidays come around, my brother will take time to make large batches of saltine toffee for friends and family as a simple yet heartfelt gift. I’ve always thought it was incredible and wondered how I could go about making it myself. My brother took me through the process, and I wanted to share it with you all! This treat is simple to make and the perfect balance between sweet and salty. It’s delicious and slightly addictive.

So, let's make some toffee!

Step 1: You Will Need...

  • 1 box of Saltines $2.74
  • ½ stick of butter (I prefer unsalted, but salted works too) $3.24
  • ½ cup granulated sugar $2.24
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract $4.00
  • 1 bag of chocolate chips (any kind will do) $2.40
  • 1 medium-sized saucepan (a pot works too)
  • 1 baking sheet
  • 1 METAL whisk (if it’s plastic, it’ll melt)
  • 1 spatula
  • Aluminum foil
  • Measuring utensils (½ cup, 1 tsp, 1 tbsp)

Extra: Toppings! Such as peanuts, mini m&ms, or even chopped candy canes!

All ingredients add up to $14.62 (All prices are from Walmart)

Step 2: STEP 2: Setting Up

Take your baking sheet and cover it in a layer of aluminum foil. This is so that when you pour the toffee, you won’t ruin the actual sheet (toffee is a pain to remove once it’s hardened…). Next, take the Saltines and place them salted side down on the foil in either a 4x4 or 5x5 layout (I usually do 4x4) Set this aside for later.

Step 3: Step 3

Put your pan on the stove at medium-low heat. Take your stick of butter, cut it in half, and add the half-stick to the pan. Let the butter melt completely before adding a ½ cup of sugar.

Step 4: STEP 4: So Much Stirring...

This part takes up a majority of the cooking time. After adding the butter and sugar, now it’s time to take your whisk and stir, stir, stir! A few minutes into the stirring process, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and mix some more! Then, a few more minutes later, add a splash of water (I’d say about 2 tablespoons). Stir the mixture consistently for 12-15 minutes or until the toffee turns a golden brown.

Step 5: STEP 5: Time to Pour!

Once the toffee is ready, turn your stove off and take the pan over to your sheet of Saltines. All you gotta do is pour the toffee evenly over the crackers. Then take the chocolate chips and pour them over the toffee; the toffee will start to melt the chocolate. Get your spatula and spread the chocolate around the toffee until it’s fully melted and covering every cracker. This is also where you can add other toppings like peanuts or m&ms; just pour them on top of the chocolate, it’s that easy!

Step 6: STEP 6: Waiting...

With all the toffee, chocolate, and toppings spread onto the crackers, take the sheet and put it in the freezer for at least an hour to let all the toffee and chocolate harden.

Step 7: STEP 7: Cutting It Up

Once the hour is up, it’s time to cut your toffee into pieces! Take a knife and begin cutting in between each cracker, getting rid of the excess toffee that’s hardened on the sheet. If you want, you can even cut the crackers in half to make a bigger batch.

Step 8: Mission Accomplished!

After the toffee is all cut up, display your treat on a platter, package them as a gift, or just treat yourself! And now that you know how simple it is to make, you could snack on them whenever you want! Sweet, salty, and crunchy; what more could you want?
