Introduction: Develin Gym

James Develin has wanted to construct a gym, but he wanted to allow students to submit a design. He wanted everyone to be able to use this gym, even people with disabilities, and he wanted it to be friendly for the economy. So I designed a gym to do just that. It's called the Develin Gym. This gym was specifically designed to allow anyone to work out and be friendly to the economy at the same time. I wanted my design to be big enough to fit different types of workouts so individual people could improve in different areas. I added plants and a small garden on the second floor so people could take a break while also helping the environment. I researched what type of equipment commonly went into the gym and what different sections looked like. I did want it to look like a gym but also have parts that a gym wouldn't have, like a basketball court.

Step 1: Lobby

Once you walk into the gym, you will enter the lobby. Of course, before you start working out, you must sign in. However, once you sign in, you will be able to choose your workout length, the type of exercise you want to do, and if you want a personal trainer. This is only to ensure the safety of everyone who wishes to work out.

Step 2: Locker Room/Bathroom

To the left of the gym entrance (after you leave the check-in), you can find the locker room and bathroom. It's a rather small room, but it has plenty of lockers so multiple people can store their stuff if needed. There are only three bathroom stalls; you may change in each and actually use the restroom in each. This locker room and bathroom are for both males and females to use.

Step 3: Main Floor

The first thing you will see once you exit the check-in or locker room is the main floor gym. This has treadmills, a weight bench, a bicycle-like machine, a rock wall, and a weight rack. The treadmill and bicycle work on cardio and can help you improve your stamina. With the weight bench, you can do bench press as well as other workouts, and next to it, you can find different weights to place on the bar. Next to the weight bench, closest to the rock wall is a weight rack. The weights on there range from 5 pounds to 40 pounds. They are easy for people to use and people who are confined to a wheelchair can easily use these to work out. There are workers instead of cameras who are constantly surveying the gym to make sure not a single person gets harmed and that people get help when they require it. The rock wall is the only way to get up to the second floor of this gym, but for those who are unable to climb it may be lifted up by a worker.

Step 4: Basketball Court

On the other side of the main floor, you can find a basketball court. However, you are not only allowed to play basketball. If you wish, a worker may put up a volleyball net or a soccer goal so other people can get some practice in. This court is great for gaining extra practice as well as building up muscles if lifting weights is not an interest of you. The vines to the right of the court are meant to add some plant life to the gym because most gyms don't have plants inside them. These are meant to be appealing and make this gym stand out from others.

Step 5: Second Floor

Once you climb the rock wall, you will be able to use the equipment on the second floor. Up here there are more treadmills and there is a similar machine used for running or climbing (in a small sense). Instead of running on a flat surface, however, the steps that you place your feet on turn in circles and you don't lift your feet up. This makes it a little easier. You also have bars to hold as you go. It's kind of like hiking.

Step 6: Outdoor Yoga

Outside, above the main gym, there are yoga lessons. Doing yoga improves your posture, flexibility, metabolism, blood flow, self-esteem, lung function, and sleep. It also keeps diseases at bay, helps lower blood sugar, and builds muscle strength. All of these exercises are meant to calm you down and not be super complex. People of all ages can do these exercises because they are so gentle. Yoga is a 5,000-year-old practice from India meant to unite the mind and body. We have yoga balls and small weights are included, though they are not required.

Step 7: The Develin Gym

This gym's design is unique and easily stands out from the other buildings. Despite having little equipment for people confined to a wheelchair, they are still able to enter this gym and use the weights and they are actually able to do yoga on the second floor of this building. Doing yoga in a wheelchair is common and also very fun, according to people who have done it. The multiple plants around the building help people feel relaxed and there is more fresh air because the plants are producing oxygen. This gym differs from other gyms because it has a little bit of everything and people can work on whatever they need. It also provided safety and every few hours, the tangible objects are cleansed so they are clean for the next day. Overall, it has a special design and the windows are added to use natural light instead of using too much artificial light. The Develin Gym fits James Develin's desires by being friendly for the economy and it's safe for people with disabilities or injuries (like rehabilitation after a broken bone).
