Introduction: E-Textiles Snail Tutorial
The steps below shows you how to create an initial, textile model of a snail; with the intention of developing the design with the introduction of E-Textiles (Electronic Textiles).
Step 1:
To create a textile snail, you will need:
- Your choice of material.
- The electronics paper template.
- Embroidery scissors.
- Paper scissors.
- An unpicker.
- A pencil.
- The snail pattern.
- Tailor’s chalk.
- Pins.
- Thread.
- A Bobbin.
Step 2:
Cut out the pattern pieces.
Step 3:
Pin the paper templates to your chosen fabric and cut out.
Step 4:
You should have:
- Snail antenna parts (x4)
- Snail stalk parts (x2)
- Snail body parts (x2)
- Snail shell parts (x2)
Step 5:
Pin the shell to the body. Sew the pieces together.
*Top Tip: Remember to reverse the direction of your stitching.
Step 6:
Repeat step 5 for the other side.
Step 7:
Draw the swirl of the snail’s shell using Tailor’s chalk
Step 8:
Follow this line with stitching.

Step 9:
These are how the electronic components will fit in the snail.
Step 10:
Pin the two snail pieces together and sew all around the whole product.

Step 11:
Sew the snail stalks to the snail body. Sew the eyes to the stalks.
*Top Tip: Remember to reverse the direction of your stitching.
Step 12:
You have successfully created a textile snail.
