Introduction: EZ ID

Problem: Taking attendance takes a lot of time out of the class and sometimes the teacher even forgets to do this.

Solution: The EZ ID is an easy way to take attendance. This device will allow the students to scan their blue tags on the EZ ID and their attendance will instantly be taken!

Step 1: Research Paper

A big problem in schools across the United States is that it takes teachers a long time to take attendance or they forget to do this. The solution to this problem is called an EZID!

Our project will use a barcode scanner that we will make that we would connect to an Excel sheet we are creating. Every time a student enters or leaves the room they will scan their ID and it will be recorded by the scanner and go to the Excel sheet to keep track of where all of the students are. In addition, the website will take accurate and efficient attendance so that way teachers do not need to spend much time completing attendance.

We conducted a research study to see how long people normally take to settle down their class and take attendance. Our decision to look into these statistics in our school is based on the fact that the invention we are making is supposed to minimize the time it takes to do attendance. The results show that seventy-five percent of teachers here at Scheck Hillel and at ten other schools nationwide take more than one minute to complete the attendance procedure. This, of course, includes the amount of time it takes to get everyone in the class quiet and seated. While thirteen of the twenty-eight teachers surveyed at Scheck Hillel say it takes them a minute and a half to complete attendance, eight of the twenty-eight insist that it takes them more than two minutes. Some of those people say it even takes them more than five minutes to take down the attendance. With the ID scanner, students only need to scan their ID as they step into the classroom and the teacher just needs to approve it before they submit it. Our design will minimize the time it takes to write the attendance by a lot and will even prohibit the loss of class time due to the usual process.

To calculate the attendance and connect the Arduino requires an Excel sheet. The Excel sheet is connected to a program called “PLX-DAQ”. What this program does is establish a connection between the RFID reader and the Excel sheet. When the RFID chip is scanned, it sends a signal to the Excel sheet and records the time the student enters the classroom, the student’s RFID chip ID number, and their name. This makes the attendance process easy and efficient for the teacher and doesn’t require the teacher to spend class time on this.

Step 2: Project Description

The ID Sensor is a device that scans a student’s school ID and automatically sends the attendance for the day into the teacher's attendance system. After this, all that is left to do is for the teacher to approve the attendance and submit it. The ID Sensor is a device that would stick to the doorpost of each classroom. It has an RFID scanner and your ID will have a chip that will be scanned by the RFID. Each student’s ID has a Bluetooth chip unique to each student. As the student walks into their classroom, they scan the chip on their school ID in the ID Scanner. A wifi chip automatically sends the student’s attendance into the system. After class, the teacher just needs to look at the attendance that was automatically inserted in the system, approve that everyone was actually there and no one was missing, and then submit it. This product is very helpful to teachers who are always forgetting to take attendance or teachers who take too much class time taking attendance. This is an easy way to keep track of the children in your class (and also those who aren’t there that day) without wasting so much time or worrying. Teachers will really appreciate their school for this innovation!

Step 3: Operating Instructions

1. The teacher must set this up by simply placing the EZ ID on his desk at an easy to reach spot for the students.

2. The teacher should open up Google Sheets.

3. Now, each student will scan their blue tag on the EZ ID.

4. Their attendance information (name, tag number, and time scanned) will be sent to the teachers Google Sheet.

5. The teacher should check the information on Google Sheets to make sure that all the attendance information is correct.

6. The teacher must submit the attendance once he checks it.

Step 4: Statistics

We conducted a research study to see how long people normally take to settle down their class and take attendance. Our decision to look into these statistics in our school is based on the fact that the invention we are making is supposed to minimize the time it takes to do attendance.
