Introduction: Easter Egg Earring Set Made Out of Cute Egg Buttons

I looked high and low for some cute Easter egg earrings (particularly the stud-like kind) this year and I couldn’t find anything that made me smile.  At the craft store however, while looking for buttons for another project, I found the cutest little shank-back buttons and thought to myself “I can make those into earrings!”

This instructable is the process that I used to make those cute stud Easter egg earrings (and/or a lapel pins) out of the buttons.  (Who would really use a basket button anyway?)

It took me less than 20-minutes (and I was taking pictures) to create these earrings, but there is some dry time for the glue until you could wear the final product.

Step 1: Materials

• Favorite Findings “Easter Day” Buttons (purchased for $2.29 at my local Jo Ann’s).  Copy and paste the link to see what they look like.

(I had these already and I surprisingly couldn’t find them on-line)
• Cardboard Emery Boards (for filing your nails).  I picked these up at Wal-Mart for under $1
• Alene’s tacky glue (I also use toothpicks to place the glue)
• Wire Cutter/Pliers

Step 2: Create

After removing the buttons out of the package and selecting the color of eggs I wanted to wear for earrings, I took the wire cutters and snipped off the shank of the buttons, as close as I could get to the back of the button.

My son asked me why I didn’t just “pop” the front piece from the back and cut [the shank] out, and I told him it was because I want the front piece to stay in place, without messing up the integrity of the button itself.  If you try this method, let me know how it works….

Next, I filed the remaining plastic from the shank using the nail file (emery board), so that the back of the button was level and smooth when I rubbed my finger up against it.
*HINT* 
As the plastic files off, blow a little air into the space in the back where the shank was, to keep the back clean before gluing the earring post on.
**2nd HINT** 
After the shank has been filed, rub the back of the button onto your shirt to get the oil from your finger off, so that the earring (or pin) back sticks better.

Finally, using the tacky glue I used a toothpick to spread a thin layer of glue on the back of the earring backs.
After the glue dries, wear your new earrings (or pins) with pride to enjoy for Easter.  If you do make these, or use instructions to make any other button earrings, I’d love to see them!  Please feel free to post your photos in the comments!
