Intro: Easy Homemade Peanut Butter

In this Instructable, I will show you how to make peanut butter. This homemade peanut butter recipe is so very easy to make using pretty much only peanuts. Of course, you can add a bit of sweeteners like honey or sugar, which I normally do, and a bit of salt. But it is nice to know you have complete control over the salt and sweetness. It is so fun to make and only takes about 5 minutes total! Not including the time to clean your food processor of course. If I can do it, you can do it! Let's get started!

Don't forget to follow me and check out my other Instructables. :)

Follow the easy steps below or watch the short video tutorial or do both. :)

STEP 1: Ingredients and Tools

If you like, you can print the recipe here.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups dry roasted peanuts (250g)
  • 1 to 2 tsp. of honey or sugar (granulated or powdered) (4 to 8g) or more if desired
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of salt (fine table or kosher or sea salt) or more as desired
  • 2 tsp. of peanut oil (optional) can help make it more smooth

Tools:

  • Food processor or blender
  • Spatula
  • Container to hold it like a mason jar with lid

STEP 2: Grind Those Peanuts

This whole process only takes about 5 minutes which is pretty awesome. Begin by placing your dry roasted peanuts in the food processor. If you only have normal peanuts you can lay them out flat on a sheet pan and bake them at 325 F/162 C for about 20 minutes. Put the lid on and turn on the food processor. After about 20 to 30 seconds, take a look. It should resemble coarse sand at this point. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and dislodge any large chunks of peanuts from the lid.

STEP 3: Mix, and Flavor

Replace the lid and mix some more until it turns into peanut butter. It won't take long. At this point add in the salt and honey or sugar. Or leave it out. :) If you would like it extra smooth you can add in a bit of peanut oil as well. Replace the lid and mix for another 20 to 30 seconds and then you will be done.

STEP 4: Store That Homemade Peanut Butter

I usually place the peanut butter in a mason jar. This recipe makes around 1 and 1/4 cup worth of peanut butter. Store it in the fridge covered or if you are going to eat it all within a few days you can store it at room temperature, covered. It is so yummy and easy to make! :) Enjoy!

I don't have peanut oil, can I use any other oil??
I'm the only one who eats peanut butter in this house so this would possibly not be eaten in a few days. How long do you think it would last if not eat straight away?
Hi Jannie! :) If stored in the fridge homemade peanut butter will last up to 6 months. You can store it at room temperature as well, but it won’t last as long before it goes rancid. If you eat it all the time, room temp is probably the way to go because it is harder to spread when stored in the fridge.
6 months? Wow! Thanks. Definitely going to give it a go. Peanuts on the shopping list for next months shop.
Maybe this peanut butter could be used in CharleneLutge's Dog (and man) Cookies? :-)
I love that you did this without one of those super expensive blenders I always drool at and don't have! :D I will have to try this!
Have you tried this using other nuts such as cashews or Brazil nuts?
:) Yes you can use cashews for cashew butter and brazil nuts for brazil nut butter. :) You will probably want to add a bit of oil to each for the desired consistency. And you will want to roast them in the oven for about 15 minutes or so unless they are already roasted. :)
Asked and answered already.
I didn't realize it was so easy to make peanut butter :D

Have you tried with different types of peanuts or just regular dry roasted?
Yeah, it is super easy!! You can roast the other types of peanuts in a pan. I have always just made it with dry roasted. :)
