Intro: Easy Solution for a 56 Inch Altura Hampton Bay Remote Problem

If your fan matches my model and your remote no longer controls the unit, you won't find the fix online. I'm here to save you some trouble.

STEP 1: Symptom: Fan Doesn't Respond to Remote

Wife pointed out to me yesterday that the fan/light I installed 6 months ago would no longer function via remote. It is a Home Depot Altura 56" model. Figured out the fix after a few hours, maybe I can save someone else the hassle.

STEP 2: Issue

Remote lights up when pressed, but fan doesn't respond. Confirmed fan getting proper voltage and wiring correct via full uninstallation.

STEP 3: Suspicion

Online searching will convince you the receiver is bad and needs to be replaced. I'm too stubborn for that, plus reports of awful customer service sent me on the mission to avoid that call.

STEP 4: Fix

There are no dip switches in the fan receiver (trust me, I looked everywhere) to align with the remote. This fan has a learning setting that pairs to the remote regardless of the dip switch settings.

To Re-Pair the remote, cut power to the fan. Once restored, within 20 seconds, press and hold the power button on the remote to complete the pairing process.

STEP 5: Success

If successful, you will hear a clicking sound and the fan will now once again respond to the remote. Proceed to reattach all the fan blades, light bulbs, and curse Hampton Bay for putting you through this with no online documentation of this process outside an installation YouTube video. Thanks YouTube install guy for saving me a call to Hampton Bay for a replacement receiver!

I hope you get off easier than I did having fully uninstalled and dismantled this entire fan before finding this trick!!

where did you get the globe for your ceiling fan and what type it is and where you got it from, and also I have the same kind of fan you do so it came without a remote, is it possible to connect a old reciver with a new remote from ordered online.

I have a older model an it has dip switches I ordered a remote an lined the dip switches ,still fan only runs at low speed , any help

Just so you know, there are like 5 revisions of the fan, some have a receiver with dp switches some have the sync version, several have totally different remotes. Unfortunately home depot didn't make the part numbers make any sense, but there's definitely many versions of this, I have 3 myself that are all different.

Please advise as I to took the entire fan apart looking for dip switches. I guess that make me the dip switch. I have tried identifying the breaker, but can't seem to find the right breaker. I am stumped. Anyone?

I don’t recall if i cut the breaker it just the switch, it’s been a while. Try the switch and if that doesn’t work, I’d move up to the breaker.

Mine i not on a switch,. I was asking if disconnecting the receiver from the power would accomplish the sane goal. Does anyone know?

My Altura 56 has a different remote where each fan speed button turns the fan on, so as you instructed I killed the power to the fan and removed the battery from the remote for 30 seconds then reinstalled battery and turned power to fan back on then pushed and held the "FAN OFF" button until it clicked on, after holding for only about 3 seconds.
You saved me a lot of trouble.

Hi, about two months ago my three fans starting changing speeds and directions on their own.
Finally deduced that some neighbor was on the same frequency. What are the chances?
I was almost resigned to buying 3 new receivers till I found this post.

I am experiencing this problem right now. Did you get a red light on the remote?

Do you mean cut the power at the electrical box?

My remote only has blue lights, but yes, will need to cut the power at the electrical box or switch if you have one.

I found this while looking for instructions on this silly thing. I’m wondering if I can set the dip-switches to something different than the default and re-pair the fan? Our fan works with the remote, but random signals cause the fan to turn off, the light to comes on in the middle of the night and it just does random things.
