Introduction: Electric Motor Masco Kurtz G9

This will teach you an easy way to make an electric motor using simple materials.

Step 1: Grab the Materials.

You will need the fallowing:

  • 26 Gauge magnet wire
  • A D cell battery
  • 2 paper clips
  • A rubber band
  • One or more permanent magnets
  • Sand paper

Step 2: Make the Coil.

The coil is one of the most important parts of the whole motor.

To make the coil you will have take some of the 26 Gauge magnet wire and wrap it around a round object such as a D Cell battery. Once it's wrapped around the object carefully slip it off one end and keep the coil tight. You will now need to wrap the ends of the wire around the edges of the coil so it sticks straight out from the side of the coil.

Step 3: Sand the Coil.

For the coil to spin when attached to the rest of the device some of the coating of the wire has to be removed. You will have to remove all of the coating from one side and half of it from the other. Grab the coil carefully and run the sandpaper across the wire sticking out on one side until all of the coating is off. For the next side you will have to carefully take the coil and run the sandpaper across the bottom part until the coating is off.

Step 4: Bend the Paperclips

Take the paperclips, take then ends, and then bend them till it makes a 120' angle. Then take the end of the paperclip and bend that until it makes a loop so you stick the ends of the coil through.

Step 5: Put It All Together.

Take a rubber band, double it up, then put around the ends of the battery. Take the end of the paperclip and slip it under the rubber band so that it touches the end of the battery. You may then take the coil and place the ends through the loop in the paperclip. Place the magnet under the coil. If it doesn't start right away then try to give it a spin.

Step 6: Tuning and Troubleshooting Your Motor.

There may be a few minor problems with the motor so this should help you find solutions.

Coil:

Make sure the ends of the wire coming are off the coil are straight, and that they are sanded properly. You should be able to draw a straight line from one side of the wire through the center of the coil to the other side of the wire.

Battery:

Make sure the end of the battery is touching the paperclips.

Magnet:

Make sure that the magnet is directly below the coil but not coming in contact with it.

Step 7: How to Make Improvements.

  • You may make more coils by wrapping it around a smaller cylinder to make it spin faster.
  • You may chain batteries so that there's more power going to the coil and this will make it spin faster.
  • You may move the magnet closer to the coil or add more magnets.

Have fun with it and be creative! Don't be scared to experiment to try to make it more efficient. because you could be surprised.
