Introduction: "Exploding" Bomb Cake Pops

There's cake. And then there's cake pops. And now there is exploding bomb cake pops! These scrumptious cakes on a stick are fully equipped with a candy "fuse" and a chocolate "bombshell" and even contain some explosive power. In the middle of these cake pops is a small compartment of Pop Rocks that explode and fizz upon contact with your mouth. Inspired by a recipe I saw for Independence Day firecracker cakes, I decided to make these tasty treats that add a little fun to any occasion!
Before you begin you need to gather some ingredients and supplies.
  • prepared 13"x9" chocolate cake, cooled completely
  • 1 jar of chocolate frosting or a few cups of homemade
  • 2 cups (1 package) chocolate chips or black candy melts
  • 3 tablespoons Crisco or vegetable shortening (if using chocolate chips)
  • 4-5 packages of Pop Rocks
  • Licorice or a Fruit Roll-Up
  • Popsicle or lollipop sticks
  • block of foam
  • basic cooking utensils
  • brightly colored paper
Baking Instructions:
First, (I know that it's sad) crumble up your cooled chocolate cake and place the crumbles in a bowl. Mix in enough chocolate frosting to make the cake crumbles stick together. Pop the mixture into the fridge until cool and firm.
Next, remove the cake mixture from the fridge and form it into balls. It is up to you on how large you want your completed cake pop bombs to be, but between 1"-1 1/4" is a nice diameter. With a straw or other tool, form a small cylindrical compartment in the top of the cake balls that goes down about half the diameter of the ball. Freeze the cake pops. The reason for freezing the pops is so during the dipping process the cake doesn't fall apart.

Decorating Instructions:
In a microwave-safe bowl melt the candy melts or chocolate chips until melted to a nice consistency. If you are using chocolate chips, add 3 tablespoons of Crisco.
Next, dip a few centimeters of your lollipop or Popsicle sticks into the melted chocolate and stick it into the bottom of the cake balls. Allow the chocolate to harden.
Dip the cake balls into the melted chocolate, covering them entirely and smoothly. Push the coated cake pops into a block of foam and let them cool. If the compartment you made earlier fills with chocolate you can scoop it out with a Popsicle stick. Let the chocolate shell completely harden before moving on to the next steps.
Fill the pre-made compartments in the cake pops with Pop Rocks. DO NOT fill the cake pops until within 1 hour of serving for the Pop Rocks will pop upon contact with the moisture of the surrounding cake. Finally, shove a small "cap" of some melted chocolate or cake mixture into the top of the compartment and top off the cake pop with a small length of licorice or twisted Fruit Roll-Up. To imitate the sight of a lit fuse, cut up small paper stars and attach them to the licorice with melted chocolate.

Congratulations! You have finished. Now you not only have a scrumptious treat, but also a exploding dessert to add fun to all occasions. Have Fun!                                 ~icecats~
